Organizational Analysis: Allouez Parkside Village
Allouez Parkside Village is a small assisted living facility located in Green Bay. The organization cares for a wide array of patients with differing care needs. A strong organizational chart is needed in order for the facility to establish clear authority, structure of working relationships and how these relationships function together to create a strong and respectable organization. The organizational chart is a powerful reference in determining power and communication among its members. Through observation, I was able to note the culture and climate of the organization, and how these factors contribute to the overall structure and function of Allouez Parkside Village. At Allouez Parkside Village, nursing is a critical position that is required for the organization to function properly. APV is a licensed community based residential facility that is owned and operated through Hillcrest Properties. The organizational chart is a tall structure in which power and decision making roles are held by only a few people at the top of the chart. The chart also shows a decentralized system. Employees do not have to communicate through many layers in order to contribute to decision making, The top of the chart consists of the administrator of the organization. The administrator has a narrow span of control, and is only responsible for a few people below them. This person is responsible for managing staff, handling financial issues and supervising budgetary restrictions of the organization. The administrator is also responsible for handling family questions and concerns about the facility. When looking at the organizational chart, you will find nursing staff at the next level below administration. Nursing staff at Allouez Parkside Village consists of two registered nurses and one licensed practical nurse. The roles of these nurses consist of direct patient care when health concerns arise, such as care of wounds from a fall. The nurses will review documentation from the CNAs and address health concerns of patients or their families. The nurses will perform assessments based on specific health complaints, and then determine an individualized plan of care for that patient. The nurse then implements the plan of care, and makes other staff aware of the plan. They then observe the implemented plan, and evaluate its effectiveness and make any changes necessary to ensure high quality patient care. The nurses are also responsible for scheduling staff and dealing with staffing concerns. When an employee calls in sick, and is unable to find a replacement, it is the nurse’s responsibility to find a replacement for the shift. The nursing staff falls in the middle of the organizational chart, which gives them authority over several personnel, such as CNAs, life enrichment, housekeeping and dietary staff. Administration also has its own sources of power and authority. Our administrator holds different types of power which include personal and professional power. Personal power is observed because she is confident in herself and believes that her individual efforts can make a difference throughout the organization. She also holds professional power, in which she uses her expertise and competence in order to make a change or contribution to the organization. Through her personal and professional power, she also obtains several different sources of power. Sources of power of the administrator include rewards, coerciveness, referent and legitimate. The administrator can provide rewards, such as pay raises, which helps to give her power while giving others an incentive to work hard and change negative behavior.
