Organisational Behaviour---Importance in business of Values
The term of values can be defined in a great many of ways from different perspectives. Generally speaking, it refers to “basic convictions that a specific mode of conduct or end-state of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite mode of conduct” (Jihong Zhao, Ni He, Nicholas P. Lovrich, 1998). Over the years, people have been well aware that the strong power and influences exerted by the values are pervasive and prevailing in almost every corner and every field all around the world. On the one hand, it influences our attitudes and perceptions toward the world and helps us recognize what is “wrong” and what is “right”. On the other hand, it provides guidelines for our behaviours and activities.
However, little attention has been paid to the influence, strong power as well as significance generated by the values in the business field (Chen, C.C., Chen, X.P., Meindl, J.R., 1998). Whether in the business organization’s internal management or in the establishment of good relationship with the customers, the values seem to play an increasing important role in improving its management and performance so as to enhance the business competitiveness of the organization. Apart from that, to a large extent, the values can be considered as one part of the culture and it is different in different cultural background, which can make people better understand different motivations, behaviours and attitudes made by people in different cultural background.
In this paper, firstly, the author will present the business organizational values and the influences exerted by the values on the business organization’s internal human resource management. Secondly, it will analyse the elements like trust, commitment of values and introduce its influences on the establishment of good relationship between the business organization and its customers. Last but not least, also from the angel of business filed, it will present the difference of values in different cultural background by analysing and comparing different values formed in China and Australia.
Organizational values and the influence on human resource management
Just as mentioned above, values refers to the basic convictions that a code of conduct should be observed to guide people’s behaviours and activities. Similarly, the organizational values mean the common beliefs accepted by the people in a particular organization and it consists of the general characteristics of the organization. Actually, the values can be regarded as a significant component of the organizational culture and it constitutes the organizational members’ beliefs and attitudes that the norms, behaviours and relevant regulations stipulated in the organization are acceptable. Schein (1985) pointed out that the organizational values are the organizational members’ common beliefs about what the entire corporation represents, what the end-state of existence of the corporation is.
Organizational values play a very significant role in many aspects. Firstly, it lays a very solid foundation for the setting of tone of the organizational environment and culture, which can contribute to the enhancement of members’ solidarity, the efficiency of the organizational operation all well as the achievement of the organizational collective goals. A great number of evidences suggest that the organizations should enhance the values like cooperation, teamwork, trust, creativity and so on so as to achieve the organizational collective goal and better results. Kotter and Heskett (2002) argued that the value-oriented companies tend to have better performances than others in terms of organizational revenues, profit performance, number of job creation all well as the stock price.
