Orem's Nursing Theory
There are many situations in nursing care where a nurse would apply a nursing theory. As Hood mentioned, a particular nursing theory may fit a clinical situation better than others (Hood, 2014, p.149). This allows the nurse to use the wide array of models to give care that is patient centered. The theory that appealed to me most is Orem’s theory. Orem’s theory states that “the purpose of nursing is to help people meet their self-care needs” (Hood, 2014, p.136). This I feel plays an important part in the recovery of the patient.

As a nurse, I have encountered patients who have a diverse situation and typically need more resources to address their needs. An example was during my clinical practice; I was assigned to an elderly gentleman whose

Self-care describes the behaviors that a person learns to perform for himself that contribute to health (Hood, 2014. P.136). The self-care deficit is the “relationship between actions that a person should take for health functioning” (Hood, 2014. P. 136). The self-care requisites are the needs that are associated with the development of health (Hood, 2014, p.136). Self-care demand is “therapeutic actions to meet needs” (Hood, 2014., p.136). Lastly, the agency is the “capability to engage in self-care” (Hood, 2014, p. 136). During my encounter, I evaluated the patient’s current physical state and what were the factors that contributed to it. Along with poor management of his healthcare needs, he also lacked social support from family and was not in a clear mental state to make his needs as a priority. These were internal problems that needed to be addressed because by even trying to fix the current problem he was admitted for; the care would not have benefited him to keep his health in good standing. Working with the collaborative team, we included social services to look into resources for the patient, which included meal services, community programs for seniors, and follow-up care for the patient. Due to the lack of support from his primary family members, he needed additional monitoring to ensure his …show more content…
I feel that Orem’s self-care theory gives a general understanding of what needs to be monitored for a patient whether it’s in the inpatient or outpatient setting. A patient may not state that they need assistance, whether its physical, social, or psychological. Although, as a nurse, we need to look at the broader picture and break down what is the problem, as small as it may be, and address to give the patient the best possible recovery in

There are several definitions of nursing theory today. Meleis (2012) defines nursing theory as a conceptualization of some aspect of nursing reality communicated for the purpose of describing phenomena, explaining relationships between phenomena, predicting consequences or prescribing nursing care. Nursing theories have been used and still used today as theoretical framework to guide in nursing clinical decision making and better practice. There are three categories of nursing theories, which include grand theories, middle-range theories and situation-specific theories. Grand theories are broader in scope and more abstract. It includes the mission of nursing and goal of nursing care. Meleis (2012) states grand theories are constructed from a synthesis of experiences, observations, insights and research findings. Middle-range theories are less abstract with a limited scope. It is also easily used in clinical practice and addresses specific concepts or phenomena. These concepts are easily used in a wide variety of nursing care situations and nursing fields. Empirical testing and knowledge is used. Lastly, situation-specific theories have a more limited scope than middle-range theories. It focuses on specific phenomena reflecting clinical practice. It is also specific to a specific population and field of practice. Grand theories are then further divided into four groups; needs, interaction, outcome and caring. Need theorist focus in helping individuals fulfill their physical and mental needs, interaction theorist focus around nurse-patient relationship during time of illness, outcome theorist is based on balance and stability, energy, caring theorist focus on the humanistic universe health process, including mind and spirit. With that said, the table below shows a comparison and contrast of four different grand theorists from the aforementioned school of thought, reflecting…

Self-care denotes those activities that can be performed independently by the client. While, Orem’s self-care deficit theory posits how people who are experiencing a deficit in self-care can be helped. Therefore, nurses must not only understand but they must also employ the five core principles in the of nursing care; these principles are; acting or doing, guiding, supporting, teaching and providing an environment that promotes health (Boyd, 2007). Reynolds and Cormack (1990) stated that mental illness can severely impair an individual's cognitive ability resulting in limitations in their judgement and decision making. In fact, this affects the client's ability to care for themselves. However, they explained that Orem’s self-care model is exceptionally effective in managing mentally ill client, because it allows the nurse to focus not only on the client’s inability but also on their ability. In fact, the nurse is specifically concerned with the client’s ability to meet their requisite self-care needs for daily living.…

Individuals that suffer from Long Term Conditions (LTCs) are now encouraged to gain knowledge, advise and teach others the best way to deal with and manage their conditions. The relationship between the professional has become a partnership as the patient is involved in their own care and treatment, and they play a major role in choices and decisions (Williamson, et al, 2008). Nurses are concerned with the individual as a whole, complete, or holistic person, not as an assembly of parts and processes. When applied in nursing, the concept of holism emphasises that nurses must keep the whole person in mind and strive to understand how one area of concern relates to the whole person. The nurse must also consider the relationship of the individual to the external environment and to others (RCN, 2010).…

I often wondered what the difference was between a BSN and an ADN or even what a competency would be. We take the same NCLEX test. Based on our experience, we would probably work at the same pay. I happen to be an ADN with few options, working in large hospitals is not one of them. So I did a little research and discovered that my town is filled with magnet hospitals an award given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center signifying to the public that this hospital gives quality service. According to nursecredentialing.org, 80% of nurses must a BSN by 2020. So, for me the difference between a BSN and an ADN is that I won’t get the job.…
