Should priests have to report to police, confessions about child abuse and other crimes?
Anna Vu

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says using the seal of the confessional to cover up child abuse is a "sin of omission" because all adults have a duty of care towards children. “It's not good enough for people to engage in sin of omission and not act when a child is at risk," she said. From this statement you can tell what I’m going to be talking to you about in this public meeting. My name is Justine Smith, and in the recent weeks, allegations of child sexual abuse by priests and other members of the Catholic Church have once again entered the spotlight of the media. Allegations that both child sexual abuse and institutional cover ups and investigations appear to be widespread and ongoing, the Federal Government has recently announced a Royal Commission into child sexual abuse. Confessions made to the priests are confidential and should not be allowed for the third person to know, as it is under the seal of confessions hence that it should never be broken. Everyone in this room has their own opinion about this issue but nobody has the right to tell priests what to do including myself. Priests have their own mind and religious beliefs, and they don’t follow the same law as you or either you. The confessional is red herring, so there is no proof of anything except for just simple words. Also for priests to betray the peoples trust and report it would cause less people to tell their confessions and that would just lead to further danger.

Priests are not bound by the same laws as the rest of society, and in breaking the religious belief would also mean breaking the seal of the confessional. Priests have taken an oath and to take their beliefs seriously. When a person unburdens their soul and confesses their sins to a priest, a very sacred trust is formed. Meanwhile Christ is forgiving the sins, and the priest must not reveal to anyone else what has been really

Child abuse and pedophilia is absolutely rife, not just in Britain but all over the world and most people have no idea the kind of scale we are looking at. Perhaps equally as shocking, the people being exposed as ring-leaders in the abuse cases are often high profile celebrities and well known public figures. The information that becomes public over the coming weeks and months could shatter not just the BBC, but the whole country from top to toe, as entertainers, public figures and even former Prime ministers and current politicians are being exposed as child abusing pedophiles. This isn’t just a cover up, it is one of the biggest scandals of all time orchestrated by apparently respectable…

Reconciliation can be described, as a sacrament of "penance" as this describes the essential interior disposition required for this sacrament. As explained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, it is called the sacrament of penance, because it consecrates the penitent’s personal and ecclesial steps of conversion, penance, and satisfaction. The sacrament of reconciliation is a sacrament in which the priest, as the agent of God, forgives sins committed after baptism, when the sinner is heartily sorry for them, sincerely confesses them, and is willing to make satisfaction for them. This power to forgive sin, which Jesus conferred upon his apostles, is now given to priests. When the priest raises his hand and says these words, "I absolve thee from thy sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” the penitent’s sins are forgiven. These are called "the words of absolution." This makes reconciliation a sacrament of “ Forgiveness”. It is called the sacrament of confession, since the disclosure or confession of sins to a priest is an…

According to Document 8, “priests cannot be found for love or money...we understand that many people are dying without the [confession] of penance, because they...believe that...an emergency confession of their sins is of no use...unless made to a priest…. [W]e order...you to make it known...to everybody... that if one the point of death [if a priest is not available] to any lay person, even woman if a man is not available.” This suggests that the church has taken it upon themselves to allow anyone to be a “temporary priest,” to hear the confessions of their dying neighbor. Additionally, this shows the degree of the plague, which was great, to even make the priests afraid and the church to resort to such drastic…

The paper tells about how endangered species can affect the lives of just a few people but an entire town. Examples are included in the text about how this has happened before. It is easy to understand how a species can be considered endangered but the purpose of the paper is to distinguish the difference between a species and a subspecies. There is a broad social acceptance that clergy, from priests to the Pope are perfect. This goes to a perversion of power that can be twisted. A twenty-five year study of celibacy and priesthood done by Benedictine Monk Richard Sipe, Clerical Sex Therapist, revealed that at any given time only 50% of Roman Catholic priests practice celibacy. The Vatican knows celibacy is not practiced. The higher you go to religious superiors, the more they know.…

After having a job interview or an important talk with a friend, do you ever ask yourself “why did I shake his hand” or “I should have spoken more clearly and slowed down?” After watching Amy Cuddy Your body language shapes who you are, I believe the main purpose of the speech was to teach people a valuable tool while interacting with others. She emphasizes a lot about the way you present yourself and even the choice of posture you choose. While interacting with others, people gather personal opinions of you when they are observing and analyzing who you are. Thus being said a lot of the strategies she teaches you seem to work and are also backed up by real data.…

According to the article, at the time of the investigation in 2009, Tom Corbett was an attorney general. In office as attorney general although he had been responsible for bringing the case to light, he had done little with regards to ensuring an earlier arrest of Jerry Sandusky. In addition, as governor, Tom Corbett had approved a 3 million dollar grant for potential victims of the sexual abuse. Regardless of the position held by Tom Corbett during the period surrounding the investigation, he was aware of the alleged actions of the accused along with identified victims and failed to respond in way that would be in alignment with those socially acceptable values. I believe that Corbett’s failure to take action was partly due to ethical egoism. His actions were based on the fact that he did not want to do anything that might interfere with his popularity or jeopardize his chances of getting into office as governor. He did not want to jeopardize receiving support for his campaign via financial donations and/or individual backing. I consider his actions to have been self serving. Tom Corbett’s actions or lack thereof, allowed for Jerry Sandusky to remain at Penn State with the possibility that he might continue his pattern as a sexual predator therefore causing additional harm to other minors. With this being the case, I believe that Corbett’s actions qualify as a…

Confession, like Good Deeds before him, knows already of Everyman’s sorrow, but can give him the comfort of “a precious jewel” called “penance”. Jesus, Confession continues, suffered on the cross for mankind, so man in turn must remember Jesus in suffering himself by undergoing the “scourge of penance”. Confession tells Everyman to fulfill this penance, and that Knowledge will tell him how he can clear his account book with God.…
