This article describes how Hong Kong, a former British colony was returned to Chinese control in 1997 and “placed under a semi-autonomous administration” that many consider to inreality be under Beijing’s control. The author states that “Since the handover, China has violated all of the pledges it made regarding democracy, press freedom, and freedom of expression in the handover agreement with Britain.” In Animal Farm, the Seven Commandments pledged at the beginning of the establishment of Animal Farm were completely broken as Napoleon and the pigs violated the rules. The author goes on to explain that a group of students at Hong Kong University have organized a pro-independence party, the Hong Kong National Party. The Chinese have responded ruthlessly, threatening to charge students with treason and suggesting that the party is part of an effort by “international hostile forces” whose goal is “toppling…

No matter what corner of the world, it is more than unlikely to walk up to an adoles-cent, mention the names Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Eminem or Bruce Willis and be confronted with a questioning face of ignorance. Performers and actors such as these have become increasingly omnipresent in people's lives all around the globe. American popular culture with its above-mentioned icons and its lifestyle of fast food and consumer goods tends to be received by foreign societies in a variety of differing ways. Terms such as Americanization, Westernization and even globalization are only a few of many that have been employed to label the phenomenon of America's growing cultural dominance in the world. Decades of public discourse about this is-sue have shown that all these expressions are being used interchangeably by many. We will see below, however, that it is helpful and, in my view, even necessary to make correct use of the terminology in order to come to a thorough understanding and, finally, a critical evaluation of the problem to be discussed. Various nations have been complaining about a McDonaldization (yet another word for U.S. cultural power worldwide) of their domestic cultures. The present discussion tries to investigate whether American popular culture truly poses a threat to national and regional cul-tural traditions, values and tastes or whether America's popular commodities in fact bear the potential of cultural diversity in receiving cultures. In an attempt to come to a conclusion regarding this question we take a look at the American music business as well as American film and television shows…

The United States is a society of immigrants. Ever since its formation in 1776, and even before that, the United States has attracted immigrants from around the world. Since its early days, the country has admitted more than 50 million newcomers, a larger number of immigrants than any country in history. For over two centuries, people have flocked under this nation's protective wings as opportunists, sojourners, missionaries, refugees, and even illegal aliens. With the Statue of Liberty greeting Europeans entering Ellis Island, and The Golden Gate Bridge greeting Chinese and other Asians in San Francisco, the U.S. has long since been a…

As a child I always dreamed of becoming a parent. I would watch my mother with my younger siblings and hope that one day I would be like her with children of my own to look after. As I was a child I never really took into consideration how hard it actually can be for some people to conceive. Infertility, as it turns out is actually quite common in Australia with one in six couples being affected. Medical science has it possible these days to have a family in many different ways, with the choice of surrogacy, to have another woman bear a child for you, becoming increasingly popular. Surrogate mothers could be your relatives or a close friend, or a woman willing to give other people the same opportunity to experience parenthood. Although in some cases people result to surrogacy overseas, especially in places like India, where it is much cheaper to find a surrogate compared to more westernised countries like America. The absence of ethical laws to the surrogate mother means couples seeking surrogacy in India may be vulnerable and the amount of money offered, being an irresistible lure to those who need it most.…
