There are few people in America who can say that they are a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, an Emmy award-winner, one of the richest women ever, and Forbes’ “Most Powerful Celebrity” for five separate years. There are even fewer that can say that that is only the top of the list. Simply those statements are enough to show Oprah Winfrey’s immense achievements and evoke profound respect from anyone listening. Though all of that is incredibly important, perhaps the most important achievement of Oprah’s is the fact that she was able to achieve anything at all. With the great amount of fame and money that came from her work, she became an extremely influential philanthropist. In 2007, she opened a school for gifted young girls living in poverty in Africa. She is a major benefactor to twenty-nine different charity organizations. Now, Oprah Winfrey is considered to be one of the most successful people in America. She is currently the highest ranked black woman on Forbes’ “Richest Self-Made Women” list (ranking at #3). She was the first ever black multi-billionaire and still one of only a few. She has set a pathway for black women to succeed in the way that she has and inspired so many people around the globe. I chose to write about Oprah because I think she is a perfect representative of the American dream. She started from humble beginnings, to say the least, and has ended up a great American trailblazer. When she gained tremendous success, she honorably used it to help the less fortunate. The United States of America is known for being a country that offers opportunity for those of all walks of life.
