Operation management
An operation is composed of processes designed to add value by transforming inputs into useful outputs. Inputs may be materials, labor, energy, and capital equipment. Output may be a physical product or a service. A metric used to measure the rate at which potential output levels are being met or used. Displayed as a percentage, capacity utilization levels give insight into the overall slack that is in the economy or a firm at a given point in time.
Using the data provided in the case, we are able to compile all data necessary to compute the capacity utilization at the clinic.
1. Front Desk = a. Registration
b. Verification
2. Radiology Department = a. X-ray imaging
b. Development of X-rat
c. Diagnostic reading and comments
3. Hand-off X-ray to Clinic = a. Collection of X-ray
b. Filing/exam room prep
4. Examination Room = a. Surgeon
b. Resident
c. Cast technician
The activity utilization at every step in the process is as follows:
1- It’s an automatic activity
2- There are two senior resident students, but in a current time only one of them is working
3-4-5 The current available time (in total) for these activities is: a. = 1440; b. 1440; c. = 720. But since Paediatric Orthopaedic Clinic use these activities only 2/3 of the total time they are available we have these numbers: a. = 960; b. 960; c. = 480
6-7- This activity is performed by the same staff as in 1- b.
8- It’s an automatic process
9- This activity is performed by the same staff as in 1- b. We can add that the utilization of this part of staff, three nurses is:
1.b + 3.a = 62 % + 19 % = 81 %
10- Utilization for every step in the process is calculated:
Utilization=Total time needed for an activity/ Total available time for an activity x 100 %
The direct resources of the clinic are: 1 surgeon, 2 senior resident students, 3 clerks, 4 nurses and 1 cast technician. The total time that the clinic has through these resources is:
540 + 765 + 255 + 255 + 255 + 255= 2325 minutes

Acting at 70% capacity utilisation is regarded as the best way for a business to work at, as EMR are still making use of its equipment, whilst at the same time, not having any problems that come with 100% utilisation, with regard to reduced customer service and productivity. However, in EMR’s case, they are acting at an average of 70% meaning that the capacity utilisation varies with demand which, being a restaurant, is what you would expect due to its peak times being lunch and dinner. To work out their capacity utilisation, EMR will have had to use the equation (capacity used x 100/maximum capacity), with their capacity used being the number of seats in the restaurant used and the maximum capacity being the amount of seats available to dine at.…

Nightingale Community Hospital (NCH) recently implemented processes to meet standards put forth by the Joint Commission to meet and exceed in five primary focus areas. (The Joint Commission.org) The primary focus area that NCH will highlight and potentiate will be in the area of communication. NCH is committed to the core values of safety, accountability, teamwork, and community. These core values cannot be met without clear and effective communication. NCH is anticipating an accreditation audit from The Joint Commission within the next thirteen months and we want to be prepared to excel. NCH wants to demonstrate to The Joint Commission that we provide and participate in very efficient communication with and about our patients and their healthcare from admission to discharge and everywhere in between. We need to support our commitment to our own core values by setting forth a corrective action plan based on The Joint Commission’s last audit findings and demonstrate not only a willingness to change, but the ability to improve on and maximize the importance of the primary focus area of communication. The Joint Commision Standards involved in the primary focus area of communication are UP.01.01.01 – Conduct a pre-procedure verification, UP.01.02.01 – Mark the procedure site, and UP.01.03.01- A time – out is performed before the procedure. To do this, a corrective action plan including four areas of focus has been established. The four focus areas of the corrective action plan are as follows: 1. Action Steps, 2. Accountable Parties, 3. Timeframe, and 4. Measurement.…
