Operation Barbarossa During The Cold War
One of Hitler’s ultimate goals was to take control of the Soviet Union. Operation Barbarossa was the first step to seize control over Russia. The Germans invaded the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941. The attack caught Russia completely off guard. The invasion was so devastating that in only one week 150,000 Soviet soldiers were either killed or wounded. This invasion broke the German-Soviet nonaggression pact that Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin created. Hitler’s betrayal caused Stalin to join the allied forces, which also caused post war conflict between other countries.
“Thanks to the Nazi-Soviet Pact, Hitler had achieved a degree of domination over Europe unknown since the time of Napoleon. Like the French Emperor, Hitler turned against Russia to consolidate his grip on the Continent.” .The invasion was the most important factor in swaying the Soviet Union to the allied force. In response to the attack, Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent his trusted aid Harry Lloyd Hopkins to Moscow. The Cold War lasted for about 45 years. It was a period of the two countries continually antagonized each other through political maneuvering, military coalitions, espionage, propaganda, arms buildups, economic aid, and proxy wars between other nations. One of the more obvious reasons for the Cold War was the fear of communism in western society, which was called “The Red Scare”. The United States tried to make on a policy to prevent the spread of Soviet and communist influence on nations such as France, Italy, and Greece .     The Cold War was a state of political, military, and economic tensions and hostilities between the Communist World, primarily the Soviet Union, and the Capitalist Western World, the United States and its allies. The Cold War lasted over 40 years because the beginning and ending of it leaves room for some debate. In that case the Cold War then lasted for over 70 years. The periods when tensions were at the most high were from the late 40s to the 70’s. The international incidences of particular note that brought things to the boiling point were the Berlin Blockade (‘48-‘49), the Korean War (‘50-‘53), Berlin Crisis (‘61), the Vietnam War (’59-’75), and the Cuban Missile Crisis (’62). There were points, like the Cuban Missile Crisis, were the United States were very close to engaging in a nuclear war with the Soviet Union and its allies. The Cold War spread at home too during a heightened state of fear and panic called the Second Red Scare. This lasted approximately 10 years from 1947-1957 during a time when the country was worried about national and foreign communists taking over society and the federal government. Anyone, from actors to politicians, and just the ordinary working class person accused of any communist ties, could lose their job, property, and face imprisonment even with lack of proof or evidence to support the claims.…
