Open University and Original Travel
B120 An introduction to business studies, TMA 01 Part 1 a)
Dear Nick Newbury,
In this report as requested, I hope to help you understand the current situation of your company Original Travel.
From the case study I was able to identify the stakeholders in the company which are the Founders of Original Travel (Internal Stakeholders), Customers (External Stakeholders) and Tim Best Travel (Internal Stakeholders).
Founders of Original Travel (Internal Stakeholders) Your main concern is getting financial return from the business. You will need to keep other founders of Original Travel informed and are happy with any decisions made.
Customers (External Stakeholders) Customers of Original Travel have one main concern and that is getting the highest quality of service for their money. They have a high level of power but a level of interest. If you do indeed merge with Tim Best Travel there will be more variety for the customers.
Tim Best Travel (Internal Stakeholders) They have main concerns as you, they will be worried that merging the companies may affect their client base and overall structure in the company.
I hope I have helped highlight areas of concern from different stakeholders.
Kind Regards,
(Y/N)

Part 1 b)
I think that a SWOT analysis will benefit Nick as it will help to define his business and give him further insight and will perhaps help in making a decision for the future of Original Travel. It will also help him create business goals and develop strategies in achieving them by finding out the weaknesses, strengths, opportunities and threats his business faces.
Here is the SWOT analysis I have created for Original Travel. Strengths -
Niche business which offers different services than others.
Wide variety of travel options
Loyal customers and consistent referrals.

Weaknesses -
Demands have changed and the company needs to change to meet them.

The first goal identified was to own and power the best travel brands in the world. To this goal we will first apply a strategic plan. The operational plan would consist of first organizing and identifying the work steps needed to bring this plan to fruition. The first step would be to determine where the company currently is in regards to its strengths and weaknesses. In this case Expedia is strong in the area of already offering a broad range of service and travel offerings and it is also strong in the area of having a very large and diverse portfolio of travel brands. This would establish that Expedia would need to further acquire travel companies/agencies or partner with other competing travel agencies to continue to grow to become the world’s largest offering of travel services.…

When identifying the different stakeholders based around Nick Newbury’s company, Original Travel, we can pick out those who have the highest power and interest. Nick Newbury and his co-founders, Alasdair and Tom, whose main role is to provide tailor-made short breaks, possess these two factors. Their primary expectations are too make a profit from the sales of their quirky holidays, but also see a growth on the company. By merging Original Travel with Tim Best Travel highlights this growth with a new need to offer the longer, 7 – 14 day holidays, which will “complement Original Travel’s long weekend breaks” and break it out of its niche.…

What is a business? “If we want to know what a business is we must start with its purpose… There is only one valid definition of business purpose: to create a customer. What business thinks it produces is not of first importance – especially not to the future of the business or to its success. What the customer thinks he is buying, what he considers ‘value’ is decisive – it determines what a business is, what it produces, and whether it will prosper.” Peter F. Drucker, The Practice of Management, 1954.…

Individual businesses must work in partnership with other organisations in order to be successful. Tourism is a very competitive and complex sector and many companies develop links with other businesses as a way of maximising profits. If for example Thomas cook didn’t work with other hotels, insurance companies, company picks up on arrival, Thomas cook wouldn’t make any profits, as customers wouldn’t want to book a holiday with a company who don’t take out insurance, which if an accident happened they would have thousands to pay with no compensation. Also if customers were to book with a company who didn’t book with certain hotels, you could end up anywhere without any information about it. Whereas if Thomas cook have interrelationships with hotels they are more likely to be safer and nicer hotels, meaning customers trust Thomas cook knowing the hotel is good one. This increases profit due to more repeat purchases.…
