This week allowed me to recognize that I have that quality trait of being able to remove my own thoughts and not causing anything get in the way of providing the best care that I can. When finding out that my patient has a history of genital herpes and are currently on medications for this condition, I was nervous but I was able to keep an open mind and remain nonjudgmental. After doing an assessment on my client, I felt very sympathetic for her with her diagnosis. My client stated that she was trying all of the methods that the hygienist had recommended for her over the past years. The client has been fighting with a habit that she has numerous times tried to quit, but was unsuccessful. From her habit, her oral tissue and healing will continue to delay until she is ready to quit or seeks professional help. I let my client know that I understood her frustration and informed her that we are here to help or that she would want to seek medical help from her…

Resolving this conflict allowed me to learn about my strengths and weaknesses as a health care provider. My capacity to empathize with both the patient and his wife signifies a strong sense of compassion. This enabled me to present a thoughtful approach respectful of both of their needs. When providing patient care, it is important to advocate for the patient while remaining cognizant of the patient’s relationships with others (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015). While in this instance I addressed the situation with an indirect approach, I am mindful that my natural inclination to avoid confrontation could hinder my ability to provide optimal patient care. The ANA’s Code of Ethics (2015) can help guide my practice, reinforcing that in…

Due to a nurse, an angle at the children's hospital at UNC Chapel Hill. Filled with joy she empowered me, on a day when I was afraid of the unknown. The same nurse put me to sleep for my second bone biopsy giving me the hope to push for the next day no matter the lab results. Since then I have pursued the healthcare service trying to learn and hopefully being able to give back the hope and joy that I received. At my current age, I have learned that life is not easy. All people will face obstacles which are out of their control that will challenge their faith. Each individual has the choice to rise after the disaster and make the best of the situation. During my youth, I discovered the resilience inside of myself. Finding confidence and courage to keep fighting, pushing forward. I view it as looking for the rainbow at the end of a storm, but not dwelling on the downside of the storm, staying focused on the positive future ahead. Currently I’m thankful to report that I am a happy and health senior at Brevard High School. At my current age of seventeen the difficulties of managing my health has dissipate leading to the exciting news of being cleared by my…

On my ongoing hospital volunteering placement at King's College Hospital, I have recognised the value of a good bedside manner simply by befriending patients and providing a listening ear, at feeding and reading time. Medicine may have advanced scientifically, but a caring attitude will always play a major role in helping a patient get better, hence why I interpret it as more of more of an art. By being a ward volunteer at King's College Hospital has made me realise how rewarding medicine is. It certainly tests my empathetic integrity every week preparing me for the stark realities of medicine.…

From my past experiences, I believe that having professional conversations is necessary in the clinical setting. Though one may feel a certain type of way about a situation, clinical case or a patient, it is beneficial that individual does not get wrapped up in their personal feelings because it can change the direction or the outcome of the conversation. As healthcare providers, it is imperative that we must remember that effective communication has been proven to have a positive impact on patient care. Finally, as healthcare professionals it is our individual responsibility to make sure that we communicate effectively with one another in the workplace. Educators teach and lead their students to success. In a similar manner, internal medicine will give me the opportunity to empower my patients to be in control of their health. I am certain that I would not be satisfied with the pursuit of anything other than internal medicine as a career when skills I have acquired during my clinical training could have a much more visceral application in understanding and alleviating real distress experienced by people daily. As my interest in internal medicine was deepening, I better understood the applications my character and personal experience could have in this field. I recognized the extent of effective communication with patients from diverse backgrounds. My personal experiences have helped me to…
