One of the Greatest Nfl Rivalries
Toni Rhode
June 8th, 2013
“One of the Greatest NFL Rivalries” Nothing says football to me like, the smell of my mom's famous hot wings frying or dressing up in purple and gold to cheer on my beloved Minnesota Vikings. I have learned through my years of cheering for the team, that being a Vikings fan means putting up with those “Cheese-heads” from the state next door. I believe the Vikings vs. Packers rivalry is one of the greatest in the NFL. I've found this to be true not only through my family traditions, but also from witnessing player and fan behaviors, and simply the geographic placement of these two bordering states on the map.
Ever since I was a kid I can remember my entire family getting together every Sunday, and some Mondays, to cheer on our Vikings. It is probably one the greatest and most fond memories of my childhood. But the best part had to be when my uncle Gordy would show up, things quickly turned to the infamous Vikings vs. Packers rivalry. Within moments the arguments began and the cheering got louder, my Dad and uncle would go back and forth for hours fighting over whose team had the better players, or why this year was their year.
Although I’ve grown up knowing this rivalry was a big deal amongst my family, I never fully understood it’s magnitude until I witnessed it with my own eyes. This rivalry tends to bring out the crazy side of more people than any other I’ve witnessed! Even getting players involved in the antics, I can remember in 2005, the first time the Vikings and Packers met in the playoffs, with a Vikings win, Randy Moss showed Packer fans his good side, mooning Lambeau Field. Then there was the first time I attended an NFL game, October 2011 and fittingly it was none other than a Vikings vs. Packers game. Before even arriving at the stadium I began to see the excitement of all the people just riding the train into downtown. Vikings fans had their entire bodies painted in purple and gold, and wore giant fuzzy hats with huge

Sports play such a huge role in our society; many people form their lives around watching or playing a certain sport. In my house, when football season starts, my dad and brother watch football religiously every Sunday and Monday. On Sundays some of my dad's friends come over to watch the game, my mom prepares snacks and lunch for "the guys". When the game is on they are so interested in it, that they have no idea what is going on around them, I try to talk to my dad when the game is on and he always seems to ignore me. I love how they get so into the game, and cheer really loud and yell at the television. For them like many other people, they have found football to be a hobby, something to do in there past time. They have formed habits around watching the game.…

Green Bay, Wisconsin, home to just over 100,000 people is the smallest market in any major sports league in the United States. Dubbed in the mid-sixties as “Title town, USA”, Green Bay is the proud home of the National Football League’s Green Bay Packers. Such a small town allows for many unique experiences. Only in Green Bay will you see a professional football player riding the bike of a six-year-old to the Clark Hinkle practice field. The team’s helmet is also present on the official city flag, along with a wedge of cheese, a roll of paper and a ship. Such a small town and a big name franchise once purchased for 250 dollars is now worth over 125 million. A big name franchise started from humble beginnings, a conversation between two men, and a drive for excellence.…

When football first started as a sport, teams were being built around a tough, solid defense that would take pride in hitting players so hard that the ball would get pried loose causing a turnover. Now teams are forgetting about the hard hitting players and are drafting all-star receivers and deep throwing quarterbacks. Part of this is because of the media and part of it is because of the rulebook (Easterbrook). More and more people are starting to watch the NFL and because of that organizations are starting to care more about their fans…

There has been much debate over which sports team is the most successful in the United States. Many teams have had their moment in the spotlight. They rise in popularity only to plummet the following year. Right now the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants are the talk of the entire sports world, but give it a few months and everyone outside of the New York Metropolitan area will forget who even won the game. That is how it is with most champions in professional sports. Fewer than 20 percent of Americans know that the Mavericks are the reigning professional basketball champions or that the Cardinals won the most recent World Series. Though these teams have had great success their fan base is mostly local. They have not established a national following. Over the past 50 years the Dallas Cowboys have used a great winning tradition, slick marketing, and modern merchandising techniques to establish themselves as “America’s Team.”…

Alabama Crimson Tide college football team is a better team than the Arkansas Razorbacks for three main reasons: First, the number one team in the South Eastern Conference (SEC) is Alabama Crimson Tide, second Alabama beat the number one team LSU, and the most important is Alabama won the South Eastern Conference championship game for the 2011 season. The number three team in the South Eastern Conference is Arkansas Razorbacks. Arkansas Razorbacks football team was formed in 1894, and the team’s mascot name was the “Arkansas Cardinals” at the time. The Minnesota Vikings may not have gone to the Super Bowl before, but that doesn’t mean they are one of the worst teams in the NFL football league. In fact, each season they are improving to greater their chance in the Super Bowl. The Minnesota Vikings had a strong streak this past year by closing out at week five as the only undefeated team left in the NFL. Even fewer people would have predicated this after the quarter back Teddy Bridgewater went down with a devastating knee injury. Regardless, of their scoring drive, the Minnesota Vikings are an outstanding team because of the head coach Mike Zimmer, offensive coordinator Norv Turner, and great receiving depth.…

This was war! Since its inception seven years earlier, the upstart American Football League (AFL) had fought the National Football League (NFL) for players, fans, television revenues, and respect. The successful new league had won everything except, respect. On January 15, 1967 the first World Championship game against the AFL and the NFL took place. The powerhouse NFL champions the Green Bay Packers against the AFL champion the Kansas City Chiefs. What ended in a 35 to 10 loss to the NFL, the AFL earned its long sought after respect. We pick the ones that will let us win vicariously, so that we may feel a sense of pride when they win. Picking a winning team brings us pride, but often picking a losing team will bring us more pride when they do well then a team that often wins. When someone’s favorite team is the Patriots, they often get upset when they lose. Cheering for a team that loses so often makes me even more excited when they win. Picking a team that is an underdog builds acceptance when they lose but feel pride when they beat a team that out ranks them. Being supportive of the Browns when they are at their worst will one day be more rewarding to me than cheering only for the winners. Even though it has been a long road full of upset, I believe that the Browns win the Super Bowl one day and I will be able to say that I believed in…

Regardless of Manning being released by the Colts, the Brady and Manning rivalry are a series of games between the two greatest quarterbacks in the NFL. As was previously stated, Brady has played with the New England Patriots since 2000 when he was picked in the sixth round of the NFL draft. Manning, however, was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 1998, in the first round of the NFL draft and played for the Colts until he suffered a neck injury. “Brady, and Manning have played one another a total of seventeen times,” with Brady leading the series 11-6. Although Brady leads the overall series, the two are currently tied 5-5 over the last ten seasons (Myers 23). They’ve also met five times in the NFL playoffs, with Manning leading the series…

When football fans hear the name “Robert Kraft,” the first thing that comes to mind is the New England Patriots and the modern day dynasty that he, with the assistance of others, have helped create. They also think about his desire to save the Patriots franchise and his dedication to rebuild the organization from the ground up. However, when players hear the name “Robert Kraft,” they think of a different man. Not only do they recognize him for his tremendous commitment to his football team, but for his superior dedication to the entire National Football League. In the midst of the 2011 NFL lockout, Robert Kraft played an instrumental role in helping both sides agree to terms that would ultimately save football. Jeff Saturday, an NFL Offensive Lineman—now retired—said, "Without him, this deal does not get done. ... He 's a man who helped us save football (Litke)."…
