Oncology Nurse Personal Statement
My nursing relationship began shortly after my 18th birthday when I sat for my nursing boards and became as a licensed practical nurse. I attended Clara Barton High School, a vocational school in NYC. From the time I was a young girl I knew I wanted to become a nurse; however I had other conflicting passions that I wanted to explore that ultimately served to reinforce my greater passion for pursuing a lifelong relationship with nursing. Majoring in psychology and English in undergrad let me pursue my life long love for books and literature all while continuing to work as an LPN. I grew a bigger appreciation for nursing when my grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2009. Although my grandmother died nine months after her diagnosis, but the oncology nurses were the backbones of my family at the time. It was the first time someone very close to me was terminally ill, and we all felt helpless. The nurses were there to provide the proper end of life care for my grandmother and for us as a family. Caring for my grandmother had an immense influence on my career decisions. A year later, I began working as clinical care coordinator in radiation oncology and I was able to advocate, comfort, support, and be empathetic towards patients going through difficult cancer treatments. Concurrently, I discovered that I had a passion for community health and a desire to work towards promoting health equity. I earned a masters degree in public health. I’ve been fortunate to explore other areas of interest and now wish to leverage them to pursue a lifelong commitment with nursing. As a nurse I hope to continue to do work that will promote global health equity and be a voice for those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. My short-term goal is to successfully complete the program and explore different areas of nursing. Long term I’d like to pursue an advance practicing
