Ona Lurgis Rudkus

There were two immigrants that have arrived in Chicago being married. Their names are Ona Lukoszaite and Jurgis Rudkus. They hold their wedding feast according to Lithuanian custom. Their wedding took place near a hall in Chicago and at an area called Packingtown which is near a meat packing industry and other places such as beer, food, and music in the hall. Following their Lithuanian tradition people that were hungry merged inside to eat and the musicians played very badly but people didn't really mind. Ona realizes how people ended up leaving without paying them back and she gets worried about it how much they are going to owe. Jurgis has promised her they will find a way to pay it all back. Jurgis then starts his work as sweeping down the cattle mess to the trap door. He would not let Ona or the children to work. He wants the children to continue to go to school and finish. Jurgis then goes the agent who has sold the house to the family and tells the agent to release all the hidden expenses. And so he did, then Spring arrives while expecting a baby from Jurgis and Ona. Marija ends up regaining her job again, but two months later she ends up getting fired. Ona's supervisor, Ms Henderson runs a brothel which her prostitutes get jobs easily in Ona's
Marija fears sinking down in the streets as she sews her money savings on clothing. Jurgis then sprain his ankle and can't return to his job with three months as he in pain. His infant which is his son is the only motivation he has to make it back to work. Teta Elzbieta's, Kristoforas, youngest child dies after eating bad meat for awhile. Marija lends money to Teta to help prepare a funeral because Jurgis refuses to help. Jurgis and his family know all about the secrets of the meatpacking and all the spoiled meat becomes sausages. It shows how dishonest the job works and sells diseased meats to American households. Ona and Jurgis end up growing apart because they have ended up dealing with grinding with poverty and misery in their lives. Antanas childhood has been going badly as he suffers with illnesses and the measles attack him with fury. Ona ends up pregnant again and suffers being sick and having a bad cough. Ona ends up confessing to Jurgis about her job how some guy name Connor threatens her to become a mistress and has raped her there.
