On the Subway
“On the Subway”

“On the Subway” is a poem by Sharon Olds that unfolds “to convey a sense of fear, ambiguity, inequality, and inner city tension. The situation is set by the title, and this makes all that follows clear as far as its meaning is concerned.”(para. 1). Ms. Olds tells the story through the narrator who while riding the train observes that she is alone with a young black boy. “While nothing really happens beyond the two observing each other, the poem still manages to shed light to inequality, prejudice, and stereotypes.”(para 1).

The poem begins with the narrator telling the story of the two of them alone on the subway train through her observations and predisposed prejudices. There are many
Symbolic references about class, race, and inequality made throughout the story.

As the story begins the first symbolic reference unfolds as the narrator describes the boy’s feet and his shoes. As she goes on to further describe the boy’s shoe laces we get the sense of the imbalance of equality of the races. While the sneakers themselves are black it is the laces that are white and form a complex pattern which is referred to as intentional scars. The author uses the white laces to symbolize the imbalance of power that the young boy has had have more power to face as a minority. They also suggest that since the laces keep the shoes on or together that they. The laces could also be symbolic of the markings left on the boys’ ancestors back in the day when they were slaves and had received a beating thus bearing the scars of the beating.

The woman also uses the boy’s clothing to further symbolize the stereotypes and the injustices between the races. She is fearful of the boy because of the type of clothing that he wears. She feels that because he is dressed in clothing that is considered to be more urban and open that he was dressed like someone who would be a mugger. The woman who was clothed in fur was covered. The woman is fearful of being attacked because she is more affluent and therefore more of a target. Both the boy and the woman are sizing each other and without really knowing one another they both have their own feelings about each other. The boy knows that since the woman is a white woman she is covered in fur and therefore she has more affluence and power. The woman is truly fearful of the boy because of her own preconceived thoughts about race. She cannot look passed what the boy looks like woman is uncertain of the boy. She looks at him with fear that he can attack her at any moment because of her affluence.

The author continues to discuss the separation of races by discussing how much easier it is to be a White person than it is to be an African American. The poem indicates that being white offers privileges that being African American does not. It is the color of her skin that has provided her with better opportunity and separated her from the boy on the train.

This poem is relevant today as it exemplifies stereotypes and inequalities that are still present in our society. The woman on the train represents wealth and power. The boy represents missed opportunity and poverty. The woman on the train feared that she was going to be attacked by the boy on the train simply because of past experiences and making judgments on someone simply based on the color of his skin and how he was dressed. Chances are that had the boy on the train been white the woman on the train would not have the same fear or feel the same way. Even in our society today we have people who are still quick to make rash judgments while not having all the facts or making a decision based on past experience.

I also think the poem does reference some compassion between the boy and the woman by the end of the poem as the woman mentions that both races can be misunderstood and that both of them can get hurt or be harmed by being judged. They each have struggles that they have to overcome.

Racial tension, a concept that has been around several years ago, and is still occurring now. The cold war between the whites and blacks greatly affect both present and future relationships such as: walking past each other with the urge to start a fight, children growing up with racist mindsets, and even something as simple as being near one another with hate. In Sharon Old's poem, "On the Subway," a description of Old's's encounter with a black man is set. Several poetic devises were included to enforce her hasty behavior and mindset such as: imagery, tone, and analogies.…

The boys whose age we do not know, had been warned by other passengers of the consequences that could occur due to hopping to and from subway cars. Although, one lady was scared of embarrassment, she knew that she had to say something. She had her own boy at home. "You boys will be hurt. You'll be killed", she said. The boys acted like they were going to obey her but instead made a mockery of her. If they would have respected her words and listened, things might have been different.…

John Hope Franklin’s “The Train from Hate” tells a story of a black family in Oklahoma during the time of racial separatism. When the family boards a train to head a couple miles out of town to Checotah, the conductor informs the mother that they must leave the train when it stops. The mother tells the kids that they must exit the train and head back to their hometown of Rentiesville. The narrator, who is a young boy does not understand why the white conductor is being so hateful to the colored family. This is a pure evidence of the innocence of children. His mother began to speak to the boy to calm him. She began explaining to the boy that even though they were separated by race, one single race was not superior to the other. The mother then said “under no circumstances, should I be upset or distressed because someone sought to demean me.” (Franklin 711) These words stuck with this boy for the entirety of his life, acting as a compass for how he interpreted actions of others. The major claim the author seems to portray in this short piece is the value of life, not based on race but on character. The claim of racism is also heavily emphasized. However, racism is one of the most prominent claims, I believe the author wanted the reader to relate with the claim of human value.…

The meaning of this artwork is to show, by some clothing, that a little boy can look like an adult, but the boy thinks it’s frightening. I say this because the boy has on clothes that an adult man would wear, the blazer, the hat, the dress shirt. I say he doesn’t like dressing up like an adult because the boy looks scared. His facial expressions, the way he’s positioned, and the dark background says he’s scared. Almost as if he is scared to grow up into an adult.…

One more thing that I liked about the essay is the clear description of moments he had in the train. He described about person, building, streets and many more and they are full of imagery. Also about the wide ethnic mix. Even things that wasn’t very pleasing. He talks about violence too. He tells about seeing a woman pull a knife. Then goes on to talk about women who talked about slapping someone silly and putting them into the hospital.…

In Brent Staples’ personal essay “Black Men and Public Space”, he tells the readers what happen to a young black man in an urban setting. He pinpointed that people often stereotype you because of color, race, gender, culture or appearance. In addition, the author expresses to us that he notices the space between him and other people, such as women on the street. Some people may disagree that women set a certain amount of space when walking by a black man on the street. This statement is not true and public space is not about race, gender, color, culture, or appearance.…

In the Kitchen In the story In the Kitchen, Henry Louis Gates Jr. makes the point that there are some things that you just cannot take away from people, such as character traits and people's ways of life. Those are things that you cannot get rid of no matter how much "hair grease" you put in your life. When Gates was a young boy, he would watch his mother do the people's hair in their kitchen and would marvel at how the black person's hair would always go back to the kings no matter how good it looked when it was done up, when it hit the water, it went right back to the kinks. The kitchen in Gates' mother's house was also a permanent, irredeemable kink. When a black person would straighten their hair, as soon as they washed it or even got water on their hair, it would go back to the natural kink that it originated at. Many people in life try to forget their background or where they came from and ignore their roots, but that is a part of you that you will always have with you and no matter how much you try and make it go away, your roots are a permanent thing and can never be erased. In the past 30 years, the superficialities of the world have become the predominant thing. Models are 15 pounds underweight and starve themselves to look like the "ideal" woman, whites try to be and look like blacks, blacks try to be and look like whites. There are so many ways in the world today that you can cover up your roots and who you are, but there is not one way that you can get rid of them. From plastic surgery, to skin lightening or darkening, to the clothes we wear or the way we talk. Nobody should ever be ashamed of who they are, that is what makes America beautiful as a country, because we have so much diversity between our citizens, and that we are able to come together and work as one nationality.…
