Character Analysis Essay

Being a part of a gang meant to have pride, at least that is what Andy presumes. Andy, a member of the Royals, a notorious street gang, has been stabbed in an alley by a rival gang, the Guardians. Despite this act in Evan Hunter’s “On the Sidewalk, Bleeding”, Andy proves he is not frightened at the thought of death. Instead is only filled with an overwhelming sadness that his life is coming to a short end. Throughout the novel, Andy shows himself as a hopeless, regretful, loving and depressed person through his acts, making him ultimately a complex individual.

In the introductory paragraphs, Andy portrays himself as hopeless when he lay helplessly in the alley. He lay on the pavement, trying to scream for help as he gasps for air, but could not. The author then states: “He lay bleeding and wishing he could cry for help, but there was no voice in his throat” (Hunter 99). The quote proves that Andy is hopeless because he could not even seem to do something as simple as cry for help.

Andy begins to speak to himself as if he were really speaking to Laura. He states: “I love you, Laura” (Hunter 101). During his last moments all he thinks about is the fact of him leaving Laura and never getting to say his final good-byes. Furthermore, he starts to wonder if he would ever get a glimpse of her again. On this occasion, “It was then that he wondered if he would ever kiss Laura again” (Hunter 100). The symbol of wanting to kiss Laura is a way of expressing his affection towards her. By Andy wanting to kiss Laura means that he probably wants to see her again and talk to her. As a result, Andy proves he is loving when all he wants and thinks of doing before dying is to see Laura one last time and kiss her. Andy shows he is a complex human through all of the emotions running through his mind having to do with his affectionate and loving relationship with

She tells countless stories of her father and the liar’s club, a group of men sitting around and telling their life stories. Karr recognizes her father’s lies, but sits quietly. As a child she was exposed to many of her parents fights, recalling, “we’d go...to see who'd thrown what or who passed out” (Karr 39). Her mother was mentally unstable, pulling a butcher knife on the children and even burning their clothes. After all they had witnessed through their mother's deteriorating state of mind, they still chose to live with her during the divorce. Their loyalty to their mother shows the endurance of love and family, where not even a knife to them can scare them away. Walls also uses anecdotes, but to achieve an entirely different purpose. Walls tells story of each of the many places she moved around with her family, each consistent with their bad living conditions. Her summer was not filled with vacations and water parks as other kids, yet still enjoyed it because “each day we had more light to read by” (Walls 168). She recognized that this was not her ideal life, and had always been set on making a better life for herself until she could finally say the words “I actually live on Park Avenue” (Walls 268). Her anecdotes showed the reader that the past does not define oneself, and one can make himself into something greater than what they were raised to…

Darabont and Kesey use messianic imagery to display conflicts between hope and oppression. Darabont portrays Andy as a humble Christ figure who “…had a quiet way about him,” and strolled like he had “an invisible coat that would shield him from this place [Shawshank prison]” suggesting the same modest traits of Jesus. Darabont uses this religious allusion to foreshadow that hope will prevail; Andy’s hope never fades, “…there is something inside that they can’t get to…Hope.” Darabont used a birds-eye-view shot to place the audience in a God-like position when Andy escaped; with his hands outstretched as if to say, ‘thank you God,’ emphasising his hope for success and being ‘reborn’, like Jesus, into freedom. In contrast to Darabont, Kesey uses messianic imagery to convey oppression prevailing. McMurphy states that he is “not a saint or a martyr.” Unlike Darabont’s portrayal of Andy as a sombre and modest Christ figure, Kesey portrays McMurphy as loud and confident but puts on a façade for the sake of others, asking “Do I get a crown of thorns?” when faced with electro-shock therapy and insisting “that it wasn’t hurting him,” telling the others that “all they was doin’ was chargin’ his battery for him.” Kesey portrays him as ‘self-sacrificial’,…

Similar to her conflict with Mr. Neck, she also shows her bravery when she faces Andy Evans. In the text, Speak, Andy Evans is an example of the term symbolism because he represents Melinda's biggest fear. Andy Evans is the biggest fear because he did the most damage by destroying Melinda's speaking ability. In the text, Speak, there was evidence which said "I am trapped with Andy Evans... He is made out of slabs of stone and gives off a smell that makes me afraid." (Anderson 193). When one thinks of a tiger, they normally think of a strong and courageous animal. On the other hand, Andy is the complete opposite. Andy is a weak and cowardice human being. During the novel, Monty shows Andy a picture he drew. In this picture there was a tiger and he had put tears on it. The tiger in this picture is metaphorically representing Andy. Monty said, “Well I drew a picture last week at school, and the teacher wanted to know why I put tears on my tiger. I told her he was sad. Like you get sometimes” (125). As seen from this quote, Monty knew how Andy actually felt. Everyone else in Hazelwood believed that Andy was doing well and improving. Andy was in great depression and only Monty knew that. After Andy committed suicide all of Andy`s pupils called him a coward for killing himself. On page 173, Gerald states, “You`re a coward and a sellout!”; Gerald had his own problems and thought Andy was selfish for killing himself. Although, these people did not know what Andy was going through, he had felt very guilty and was depressed all of the time.…
