Older Adult Interview
Interview of an Older Adult

The older adult I interviewed was a 90-year-old female. She was born August 21, 1926 in her home on the farm. This resident grew up in farming community known as Farming, Minnesota. Farming is a small town located in between Albany and Richmond. Her father was an interpreter during World War II for the Germans for 37 years. He even interpreted during the Nuremberg Trials. When he wasn’t busy interpreting German to English, he was a farmer and carpenter. He had partnered with a carpenter and would do carpentry work for some extra cash. The carpenter would then, in return, work on the farm milking cows. Her mother stayed at home to help on the farm and kept busy with the kids. The most important thing to this older

The kids were all responsible for their chores on the farm. There were usually no consequences for misbehaving since the kids always listened to their parents about what work needed to be done for the day and did their jobs. Of course there were a couple sibling feuds about who was the best milker, but in the end, all of the siblings agreed it was my resident. Growing up, this resident spent a lot of time with her cousins because they were also her neighbors. One of her favorite stories to tell is riding a horse to school with her cousin because they were in “war time” and ended up being an hour early at the bus stop. I was a bit confused by what she meant when she was referring to “war time”, so my resident informed me that it means day light savings time. This resident went to high school, but took a year off (9th grade) to stay home and help her mother on the farm. Although she never attended college, she wishes she could have but it was too expensive for her family to afford at the time. Her first job was at a grocery store as a cashier. She then worked at a laundry mat but ended up settling in Coldspring, Minnesota after the kids were born to work as a cook at the Rocorri school. She ended up cooking there for 30

The first narrative I picked was of William Thomas Malone, born October 30, 1914, in Monroe County, Arkansas. Mr. Malone was a farmer on his dad’s 54-acre farm, which he currently owns. His farther passed away in 1940 and his mother died in 1958. He recalls growing up in a six-room house, located on the farm that was very modest and lacked indoor plumbing. He described his family as being close and friendly. He had many brothers and sisters, but could not recall their names or their ages. Although he did say that he was the only surviving member of his immediate family. At the time of the interview, he was 91 years old and from the modulation in his voice one could tell that he had led a hard life. He described how after farming he started working at the local mill, he called it Southwestern Veneer Plant, producing veneer. He jokingly said that he worked there for twenty years, from 1952 to 1972, before being forced to retire, due to the closure of the Mill (Malone, 1995).…

“A typical ten-year-old child does not have to wake up at five in the morning to do chores.” (Hemauer) Jessica thinks this upon waking in the morning. She has hours of chores to do every day before and after school. Until eighth grade she could not participate in any school activities or sports. She felt left out and alienated when her peers discussed activities that they were involved in. She told me that her dad was a cook during those times. She lived in a small house in Memphis, Tennessee along with her seven brothers and sisters. She lived a very simple life by just going to school and coming home cooking and helping her dad around the house. Her mother died in child birth, so sadly she never knew her mother. She however, looked just her mother; so when her dad seen her he always told her she was beautiful just like her mother. My grandmother said she loved to help her father out by cooking at home while he was at work. She told me he’s father was a great cook and how during that time what he did was one of the only few jobs blacks could have at that time. “My father could really cook some fried chicken; he had to be one of the best cooks in town.”(Lois Stearne) She was the youngest of them all, and she told me how she hated to be picking on by them. She told me that her and her siblings use to always get into because they would pick on her about how her hair was too short. My grandmother didn’t have many friends in her early childhood her father was very protective and had them stay home. Back in those days, neighbors would watch over the kids in the neighborhood when the parents were away at work or some activity. When she could go out she also informed me about how she could get a bag of candy for twenty five cents during that time. She told me everything was very affordable during that…

The faint smell of cornbread baking in the oven, pork chops with rosemary and garlic roasting in the oven, and mashed potatoes with butter cooling off on the counter, tickling my taste buds. The rain is pouring on the rooftops on a cool autumn day. My dad is sitting across from me, in a warm gray fleece jacket and black pants. I’m giggling, trying to take myself seriously before we start the interview. Looking out the window he says, “My childhood was superb, it wasn’t an ordinary childhood though.”…

One thing that I found very interesting during the interview was that Grandma stated that they did not really have the traditional roles of man being the provider and woman being the caretaker and housekeeper. They were farmers and she said that she also helped with the farming and her husband helped with the cleaning and laundry and once the kids were old enough they were the ones who prepared the meals for the family. She stated that it was really a joint effort and not one person was responsible for one thing, they all contributed when and where they could. I found this so interesting because this was an older household that still did not have separate roles for male and female. It took place during…

This paper endeavors to evaluate how a person within late adulthood has been impacted by larger systems within their environment. Furthermore, this paper will examine how changes throughout history have influenced the person’s life course trajectory. In an effort to evaluate these factors, an interview of a person in late adulthood was conducted. To gain a clearer understanding of how these factors influence a person within late adulthood, feminist theory and the empowerment prospective were applied to evaluate how these aspects have impacted the interviewee’s life experiences. Thus, gleaning from the interviewee’s own experiences, the interviewee’s developmental strengths and weaknesses were compared and contrasted to normative development patterns that exist within others that belong to the same developmental period.…

I interviewed an adult woman who lives in my neighborhood. Her name is Marina and she is 66 years old always trying to be active but in fact, she has a lot of health issues. She lost her husband 12 years ago and from then on, she lives by herself. So, I decided to invite her for a breakfast on Sunday morning and spent a little bit time together and talk. She responded to my invite with a very enthusiasm and interest. I am assuming it is because in her life there is not happening a lot of interesting events. I know her almost 4 years and I thought I could have guessed somewhat correctly about her interests in music, films, and TV shows.…

    Life Interview Review

When I saw Ms. Mary Walker, the word “Old” does not even cross my mind. I was very surprised when I found out her age. It seemed strange that a woman of this age could show so much youth, little wrinkles, mobility, and did not cough every ten seconds as an indicator of good health. Identifying her as an individual in the 68 + age range seemed misleading but a glance at her salt and pepper afro provided some proof. A natural inquisitiveness in me wanted to know her secret. Luckily, I was given an assignment that appeared to be perfectly suitable to ask all the right questions-A Life Review. I had seen Ms. Walker several times in my childhood. We attended the same church, I met some of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, but I knew little about her life journey. One day I asked my grandmother to mention to her that I wanted to interview her for an assignment. With the relief of not being let down, my grandmother gave me her contact number the next day. A few days later, I called her to make sure that she was still interested. With the right reply, I scheduled a day when we could meet and have breakfast. That day came on August 10, 2012 at a restaurant called International House of Pancakes (IHOP). She entered the restaurant door free of prosthetic devices- another sign of good health. A woman of African American decent who stood 5’7 wearing a slightly nervous yet cheerful expression greeted me. “It’s nice to see, Aminata. Why haven’t I seen you in church lately?” The answer to her question would result in a bunch of made up excuses. This was the perfect time to redirect and focus on the assignment that brought us together to complete “The Life Review of Ms. Mary Walker”.…

On our day-to-day busy lifestyle, we usually do not take the time to look around and see the people that surround us. From the young playful children, to the elderly who sits mesmerizing their surroundings. I am very fortunate that I got the opportunity to go out my comfort zone and do this assignment. Ms. Rose Lee is 66 years old and I learned about her through her daughter a great friend that I met last fall semester. I was very happy when my friend agreed to help me and allow me to talk to her mother for my interview. I did my interview over the phone because Ms. Rose does not live in Savannah. Ms. Rose is divorced and lives in South Carolina; she identifies herself as African American descent.…

The person that I interviewed is Emily Vandoo, a floor nurse at Lankenau Hospital, located in Philadelphia Pa. Emily has been in the field of nursing for 3 years and has cared for toddlers to the elderly. Emily prefers not to work with children, especially those with terminal illnesses. She has a better tolerance to assist elderly patients who have live longer lives and who were able to have valuable time on earth before their death. Age appropriate considerations are made depending on a person's developmental stage in life. For example, in the elderly, it is important to allow autonomy, consider mobility issues and living arrangement. Family structure is an important consideration in regards to family members assisting with care for the frail elderly. Cognitive impairment is also a factors that make family structure an important part of care and knowing who will be involved. It is important to ask a patient about culture beliefs and incorporate it in their care. Emily stated, Jehovah's witness will not allow you to administer blood products, Muslim females may request to only have women caregivers and Jews may need a manual nurse call bell during the Shabbat, because they cannot turn on electricity.…

The interview process was the toughest part. Getting my father to sit down, collect his thoughts, and try to remember his upbringing was a challenge. My father suffers from Alzheimer’s. My father naps a lot and got sleepy after the first 10 minutes of the first session. When he got sleepy. I encouraged him to take a nap if he needed one, he took a 2 hour nap, in the mean time I watched a movie to pass time. After he woke up from his nap. I made him a cup of tea. My great grandma, Dorthy Baker, was born in 1923. From when she was only six years old all the way until she was sixteen one of the greatest tragedies of the United States history was happening. During the Great Depression, she lived on a farm in Ohio where she stayed at home with her mother to do chores around the house. Dorthy was a skilled housewife by the time she was eighteen. Although she was a master around the house; her true passion was cooking.…
