Olaf Torvik In Hubbard County
I will be writing about Olaf Torvik from the story. Some background information about Olaf is that his wife, Inge, recently passed away. Inge was from Germany and wasn’t treated with very much respect in Minnesota. Olaf wants his wife to be buried on his farm and he is set on doing that but, he has some conflicts with the law. In Hubbard County, Minnesota where he lives, the law forbids that Inge should be buried on his farm.
The story starts off with Olaf argueing with the sheriff about burying his wife on their property, which is against the law there. Once the sheriff makes his point about why he can't bury Inge on the farm, Olaf just sits by his wife and thinks. As he sits by her, he starts to look back and remember their marriage. Even though their marriage was arranged, it worked wonderfully and turned sweetly into love and companionship. At first, the marriage began horribly and seemed like a mistake to both of them at the time, the local authorities made

When they slowly dropped Inge down into her grave, he doesn’t say much at all except “No, I’ll wait here until the boys are finished, you go on ahead.” Otherwise its just him standing there thinking about the future. He is standing on his farm in a spot in the middle of the field. A spot where the wheat would soon grow taller, and more golden than the rest. Because of the gravestone made of wheat.
To conclude, Olaf Leif Torvik is an older farmer who had just recently lost his wife. He wants to bury her on the farm “where she belongs”. He is threatened by the law that says he cannot do so, but does it anyways even if he could face consequences. After a long time of thinking about it, he decides to bury his beloved wife Inge in the middle of the wheat field with a gravestone made out of wheat. I respect Olaf as a character and think he is very admirable as a person for always being a great person/husband to

This particular night he snuck away from his wife in the dead of night. All of this effort and sneaking could possibly suggest the father may have killed his son. Perhaps he knew he would not be able to feed another mouth and wished to take his son out of his misery. The father could have thought this action was justifiable; knowing first hand the hardships this child would have to endure and it was too much to bear for this father to bear. When he gets to the gravesite he digs painstakingly to five feet down into this baron tough ground to let only one foot of the post show above ground. In the poem the post was described as a “half-cross” this could symbolize his internal struggle between right and wrong, good and evil. In his mind, killing his son out of protection from this cruel world was a necessary evil. The amount of effort that the father put into this burial showed that he cared very much for his son. The father leaves off the engravings on…

Much of the narrator's personality is revealed in the cemetery. The reader learns that he knew the truth about her, but that after she died, he only thought good things about her. He did not reflect on the horrible things he knew she did to him, but rather on the strong love he felt for her. This shows us how great his love for her was and how he could forgive and forget the things she did to him. This also shows that he wished that they could have been together longer and that he still loved her, even after what she did to him. Since the reader learns that he knew about his wife, but did not confront her while she was alive, shows us that he was in denial because his love for her was so strong. The ‘ghosts' that the narrator sees in the cemetery are actually…

It is unique because, unlike other stories around the Holocaust, The Book Thief is narrated by Death. The way Markus Zusak uses Death to tell the story in a personal way, gives a different perspective for the reader. The story is about Liesel Meminger’s new life with a foster family; and how she grows to love words and writing. Death’s narration is personal because it gives a detailed account of Liesel’s life and he talks about himself. The narration style is overall freestyle – a mix of first person, second person, omniscient, and metafictional. Markus Zusak portrays Death differently from other portrayals of death, like the Grim Reaper, through these styles of narration. Also, the use of Death as a narrator makes Liesel’s story more special because she impacts Death, and wants the reader to be impacted as well. The metafictional narration style is what interests me most because it enables me to understand Death’s character and reveals his humanness. In accordance this essay focuses on the following question: what effect may Death’s narration in The Book Thief have on the reader and what does the reader learn about…

The story begins by introducing Kriemhild, a Burgundian princess of Worms, and Siegfried, a prince from the lower Rhine region. Kriemhild has three brothers, Gunther, Gernot, and Giselher, but the first brother is the only one who is more important throughout the story. Gunther’s actions and desires propel the story as much as Kriemhild's do, and he is often spurred to action by the advice and forethought of his vassal Hagen. At the beginning, the kingdom of Worms has passed to Kriemhild's three brothers, because of her father's age, which made it difficult to reign, and Kriemhild chose to never get married. Siegfried comes to Worms and meets Gunther and Hagen. Siegfried is recognized as a great warrior and because of his accomplishments Gunther wants Siegfried to join him on a journey. However, Siegfried wants to be able to marry Kriemhild as payment. On this journey Siegfried was supposed to help Gunther marry the queen of Iceland, Brunhild. Brunhild does not trust Gunther and therefore does not consummate the marriage. Siegfried then sneaks into their bedroom the next night using an invisibility cloak and forces her into having sex with Gunther. During a dinner party after some time, Brunhild learns that Siegfried had a hand in this violation. This creates a lot of tension between the two couples. Siegfried has one spot that is a sort of Achilles heel, in the middle of his back. Brunhild sets out to find this spot and kill him, with the help of Hagen. Gunther turns his back on his friend and Siegfried is eventually defeated. Kriemhild vows to avenge her husband, but Hagen makes her plan…

While he thinks that, Oskar and his family are actually in a limousine driving to Oskar’s Dad’s funeral. His Grandmother and Mother are also in the car, together with the driver, but it is not clear what point in time the action of the whole story is actually taking place, because Oskar is constantly telling stories from his life, the first one being a conversation with his dad about taking over the family jewelry business, quickly followed by another memory of one of the rituals Oskar and his dad had together. After this he describes how he once sent a letter to Steven Hawking, because he was fascinated by the image of the tortoise carrying earth on his back in Hawking’s book. Before Oskar starts to tell the reader about how his father died, he reports about another one of their rituals they had together. He actually spends a lot of time telling how it all happened, including his father’s voice messages recorded shortly before his death, also describing his feelings with images. He wonders why his father had not said “goodbye” or “I love you” in his messages and wants to stop inventing to find out how his father died. The story ends with the last message, which is not understandable anymore because fractions of it are missing. Oskar is the Narrator and Protagonist of this story and because he authentically thinks like a nine-year old child, the reader is struck by all the events and thoughts Oskar is processing in a high density. The author did particularly not filter or evaluate all of Oskar’s thought-content, it is very pure and at first the whole text might seem messy and is demanding to read, but soon…
