The two are broke and search for work on the farms of Northern California. Being broke is problematic for George and Lennie since they plan to own a farm someday. George is the intelligence behind this plan, while Lennie is about as sharp as a marble. The two take on ephemeral jobs, since Lennie behaves like a child and has obsessions for animals and women.
