Of Mice And Men George Is A Good Friend
Of Mice and Men

John Steinbeck is the author of the novel ‘of mice and men’. In this novel the goal is the American dream. During the great depression two migrant farmers George Milton and Lennie small who is mentally disabled go from ranch to ranch. All in the hopes of making enough money for their American dream, a ranch where Lennie gets to tend the rabbits. In this essay I will be proving that George was a good friend to Lennie. George is a good friend to Lennie for the following reasons, George put Lennie under his wing and George prevented Lennie from Suffering. A good friend should always influence you in a good way and help make you a better person.

First of all, a good friend should always take care of you and give you the best

In the end of the novel George kills Lennie because Curly and the men on the ranch were after Lennie and were going to make him suffer because he killed Curly’s wife. My first evidence is a quote from the novel this quote is said by George to Lennie right before he killed Lennie, “ You … an’ me. Ever’body gonna be nice to you. Ain’t gonna be no trouble. Nobody gonna hurt nobody nor steal from’em’.” (Steinbeck 147). This quote proves my thesis because here George is making Lennie think of happy thought and about his dream so he can die with happy thoughts. This also shows that George cares for Lennie and does not want to see Lennie suffer by Curly or by anyone else. Moreover, this quote is when George had just killed Lennie and he then answers Slim’s offer to go get a drink, “yeah, a drink” (Steinbeck 148). This quote shows that George feels a tremendous amount of guilt by killing Lennie but he knew that if they had escaped from Curly and the men then Lennie would keep causing trouble wherever they went next because he just does not understand the things that he is doing, this quote also shows that George did actually love Lennie and cared about him and that he did not want to kill him. Lennie’s death gave George freedom and the ability to go and make money without constantly having to deal with Lennie’s troubles on the other hand it was also the end of Lennie’s American dream. This quote is said by by …show more content…
However, some people might think that George is a bad friend to Lennie, they have failed to perceive that George is a good friend to Lennie, because he has cared for him and prevented him from suffering. In this quote George helps make Lennie feel better and put him out of his bad mood, “No, he said. I want you to stay with me here” (Steinbeck 145). This quote proves the other side wrong because after Lennie killed Curly’s wife George stayed with Lennie and did not leave him to Curly and the men on the ranch and a bad friend would have left Lennie and might have told the guys where he is to not. In the next piece of evidence George tells Curly that him and Lennie travel together, “We travel together” (Steinbeck 47). This quote proves my point because after the accident in Weed a bad friend would have left Lennie because then he would have more freedom and would have not gone into so much trouble because of him however, George and Lennie ran away together from the men in Weed and stuck together as a team. In conclusion, George is a good friend to Lennie because he only did what is best for Lennie and cared for

In the end of the final chapter George kills Lennie. It might seem like he's being mean, proving Lennie's statement that George is always nice to him wrong. I don't think that George is being mean by killing Lennie, on the contrary, I think George is being nice by doing so. If George hadn't done it, Lennie would have suffered much more. Curly was angry because Lennie killed his wife and he wanted to make him suffer for it.…

George has Lennie's back in every situation no matter what. George only wants what's best for Lennie. If George didn't care for Lennie he probably would've been dead sooner. When they were in Weeds George helped Lennie escape from the mob that had been sent to kill him, he also took Lennie's work card so he wouldn't lose it. George killed Lennie because he was looking out for him.”I oughtta of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn't oughtta of let no stranger shoot my dog”(61). Candys words came to mind to George and realized that he was the only one Lennie had. He was the only one who got frustrated with him but cared oh so much about him. Lennie had more than just a gunshot coming to him but George instead shortened his suffering by pulling the trigger…

Throughout chapter one George and Lennie discuss the incident that happened in weed, and we begin to see George lose control when he says to Lennie, “Oh, so ya forgot that too, did ya? Well, I ain’t gonna remind ya, fear ya do it again” (Steinbeck 7). When George says this it shows how much he’s concerned with something like it, or something worse happening again. By the end of the book Lennie has killed multiple mice, a puppy, and a woman, George knows Lennie will never overcome his disability which will result in him killing again. Therefore, George had to end Lennie’s life to protect himself, and other people from his destructive…

Some people might think that George is not a true friend to Lennie. They might think this because George kills Lennie. George could have run away with Lennie instead of killing him, or he could have let Lennie run away on his own. He killed Lennie because it was the best option he had. The mob could have found Lennie, and Lennie would just mess up again. Also he killed him peacefully, which is better than any other form of death and a sign of compassion. If George didn’t kill Lennie Curley’s mob would have killed him in a more painful way, which George would not…

John Steinbeck wrote a book called “Of Mice and Men.” Of Mice and Men is an engaging novel about two migrant workers, Lennie and George, who are trying to obtain their dreams of having their own home together. George is small and quick and is the alpha. The other is Lennie, who is big and strong, but has a mental disability, making him slow and in constant need of help and guidance. Throughout the book, trouble becomes increasingly worse, and George ends up having to kill Lennie. Most people believe that is was George’s responsibility to look after Lennie, making his killing unjustified. To further explain, George’s actions couldn’t have been changed due to the fact that Lennie would just do it again, Curly didn’t allow George to stay behind, jail wouldn’t be pleasant for Lennie, George doesn’t kill Lennie out of hate for what he did. To begin, Lennie would unwillingly just keep making the same mistakes over and over again. For example, Lennie touched the girl’s dress in Weed and now he killed Curley’s wife. In the book it states, “Dumb bastard like he is, he wants to touch ever’thing he likes.”(Steinbeck 41) This quotation shows that no matter how many times they run away to another job Lennie will just keep making mistakes. This also shows that he won’t learn that touching nice things…

They went to a new farm hoping to find work, like every farmer, their dream was to get the big stake and hopefully buy their own farm. In the stories there will be some difficulties that will prevent their dreams from happening. Overall I think Lennie was a great friend to George, that is because he looked out for him, protected him and he was always proudly talking about how hard-working his friend is. Many people argue and think the opposite, that George was a bad friend to Lennie. I don’t see it like that, George was gave Lennie though love.…

Then in the end, George makes the ultimate decision to kill his friend after Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife (pg.106).
