Significance
He travels with Lennie and takes care of her. He changes as the story goes on.
He depends on George for everything. He loves to pet soft things like animals.
He wanted to go to the farm George and Lennie were going too.

He doesn’t like Candy’s dog. He makes Candy agree with him so he could kill the dog with making it suffer.

He gives advice to people. Everyone likes him in the ranch. He understands the bond between George and Lennie.

He thinks that him getting old is making him useless. He lost his hand in a accident.

He is Curley’s father. He gets curious when George always answer for Lennie. He doesn’t appear a lot in the novel.

    When he lost his dog and that dog is the only one he can talk with for 10 more years. Candy’s dog is very old, “at his heels there walked a dragfooted sheepdog, grey of muzzle, and with pale, blind old eyes. The dog struggled lamely to the side of the room and lay down, grunting softly to himself and licking his grizzled, moth-eaten coat.”(24), his old can do nothing for that ranch anymore. Carlson is the person who killed Candy’s dog for Candy, he thought this way is good for Candy. “Look, Candy, this ol’ dog jus’ suffers himself all the time If you was to take him out and shoot him right in the back of the head— ” (45).
