The American Dream during the 1930s, people want to own a property of their own and freedom. The dream became quite hard to achieve due to the Great Depression. John Steinbeck put his own experiences of the dreams during his time and interpret them in the novel. This theme is represented through the main characters; Lennie Small and George Milton. George and Lennie travelled together to find work in order to fulfil their dream, which was owning a land that belonged to them. Owning a land meant that they have the power of freedom. Lennie is obsessed with the land they always mentioned about. “Live on the fatta the lan’!” This expression is what they think if when they had enough money to own the place. They had thoughts about earning incomes by selling dairy products and vegetation on their own, also not to worry getting in trouble in jobs because of Lennie. It gives them a sense of security and stability in financial problems. They could finally find a place to live in which is called ‘home’ which they are eager to achieve. In the later chapters of the novel, Candy joins in their plan in order to secure his place when he’s retired. For once, the dream made them think they finally achieved it, after all these work they had done. This was the American Dream that they’ve dreamt of
