Of Mice and Men Book Report

IGCSE English Literature Paper 1: Prose

In the book “Of Mice & Men” the two main characters are George and Lennie. The setting of the story seems to be set back in the early 1900’s or the late 1800’s by the dialect they use. The two characters have a unique relationship. The first character is a small quick man with strong features his name is George. The other man is very large with a shapeless face and is also quite slow his name is Lennie. Throughout the story these two characters complement each other fairly nicely. Even though Lennie gets on Georges nerves most of the time it is very entertaining to read.
First of all, the character George is the one that takes care of Lennie and makes sure that he doesn’t get into any trouble. I know that George sometimes has regret about having Lennie with him, it proves this when George said “If I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an’ work, an’ no trouble. No mess at all.” Even so I could always tell that he deeply cares for Lennie. Overall George is a loyal friend to Lennie and dealt with Lennie no matter what, even when I came to the end George only did what he felt was right for Lennie.
On the other hand, Lennie Is a gentle giant that is totally oblivious to his extraordinary body strength. During the beginning of the story is says that Lennie is very tactile and doesn’t know his own strength; it backs this up when George reminded Lennie of what he did in Weed. In weed Lennie spotted a lady with a dress of a soft fabric, and because Lennie doesn’t understand cause and effect he doesn’t think of what could happen. So Lennie grabbed the dress and naturally the lady got frightened and screamed, but simple Lennie held on without realizing he was bothering someone.
Together George and Lennie have a very entertaining relation as I stated previously. George and Lennie are exactly two different people which helps there dynamic such as; Big-Small and

Throughout the novel, Lennie already kills several creatures such as mice, puppies, and eventually a human being like Curley’s wife. When Lennie uses his strength to kill other people, he does not even notice what he is doing. Lennie cannot restrain himself when Steinbeck states that, “She struggled violently under his hands. Her feet battered on the hay and she writhed to be free; and from under Lennie’s hand came a muffled screaming… He shook her then with anger. ‘Don’t you go yelling,’ he said, and he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish. And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck.”(91) The quote explains that Lennie does not know how strong he is because he is child-like. He cannot control his strength very well and does not even know what problems he might cause by using his strength. In addition, Lennie is not rational; he always does something with emotional like shaking Curley’s wife with his anger until she dies. Fortunately, George kills Lennie. Therefore, the workers on the ranch do not have to concern about risking their lives to work with this uncontrolled guy. Killing Lennie is right because no one gets injured and workers live safely. However, some people argue that George is wrong to kill Lennie because men cannot take other men’s lives easily and Lennie is not willing to kill Curley’s wife, he’s unconscious of doing it until she’s already dead. Nevertheless, the point is not important because Lennie has mental challenges and he does not mean to kill Curley’s wife. All the workers on the ranch are also lonely, so they do not want to help Lennie as well since Lennie is a new guy on the…

Lennie is a comical character in this tragic tale of two best pals. Lennie is the more childlike one of the two. Steinbeck proves this through Lennie's words, "'Tha's good,' he said. ,You drink some, George. You take a big drink.' He smiled happily". Lennie shows that he is childish and unintelligent in this quote. Also, he is immense in size. He is described as being so when Steinbeck mentions, "…a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws." He is described as being a huge man in this quote as I had stated earlier. Lastly, Lennie is publicized by Steinbeck as weak minded and forgetful in the following quote, "Lennie said gently, 'George… I ain't got mine. I musta lost it.' He looked down at the ground in despair." Lennie is a gargantuan, childish, weak minded and forgetful man, however he is an excellent friend.…

Lennie is mentally disabled and so always ‘does bad things’, because of this, he constantly depends on George to protect him and get him out of trouble. For example, in Weed, Lennie constantly ‘wants to touch ever’thing he sees’ and this causes him to rip a girl’s dress. Soon, Lennie is accused of rape and only with the help of George is he able to escape imprisonment or maybe even death. Lennie also requires George for simple day to day needs. George helps to keep Lennie in good health, making sure that what he eats and drinks are safe and clean, ‘Lennie for God’ sakes don’t drink so much, I ain’t sure tha’s clean water’. In their relationship, George does almost all the talking to other people as Lennie never really understands what is going on and is not very smart. This is shown when George and Lennie are talking to the boss and George tells Lennie to ‘not say a word’. Without George, Lennie would never have any employment and would not live long. Lastly, George is there for Lennie as a friend and companion. George begins to spend time with him because of a promise to Aunt Clara but a friendship soon grows from that. We know that George really does care for Lennie as in the conclusion of the novel, George confesses that ‘I ain’t angry, I never been angry’ which tells the readers that George didn’t look after him out of guilt or a promise, but that he actually did like him.…

When we first meet George and Lennie, they were running away from Weed, CA for something that Lenny did. A few pages later, Lennie is found with a dead mouse. Towards the end of the book George crushes Curly's hand, kills a dog, and kills Curly's wife. This immediately tells us that Lennie can't control his strength. To me, this was a sign that Lennie wouldn't last very long. Throughout the book, George isn't the greatest friend to Lennie; he never tries to help him but yells at him. If George would have sat down with Lennie and taught him right from wrong, George wouldn't have done what he did and everything would be going just great. Another bad thing about Lennie is that if something bad happens, he tries to hide it, just like kids, if something bad happens they will avoid telling anyone about it. If Lennie told George what had happened, there would probably be a different outcome than what happened.…

George seems to be the leader between the two of them, and Lennie seems to be the one who listens to George and does what he can to make George happy. It seems like George is not only Lennie’s friend, but he also acts like his guardian as well. Lennie’s relationship with George helps him remain in a sort of behavioral straight line with few transgressions thanks to George’s guidance. However, George cares for Lennie, but his companionship with him prevents him from being as successful as he could be. George Yells at Lennie at the beginning of the book saying, ”If I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job and work, and no trouble. No mess at all, and when the end of the month comes I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get…

Through their dialogue we learn that the larger man is Lennie and the smaller man is George. Both physically and character wise, George and Lennie are completely different, almost exact opposites. Lennie is not very bright, and acts like a big baby. He likes to pet soft things, he throws tantrums once in a while, and when he senses his advantage in an argument he takes that opportunity and is whiny, immature, and unrealistic about the situation. "If you don' want me I can go off in the hills an' find a cave. I can go away any time.” George, on the other hand, is very mature, and although he gets angry and frustrated with Lennie sometimes, he always ends up feeling sorry that he was mean, and apologizes sadly. "I been mean, ain't I?" George and Lennie are very close friends, they travel together, they stick together, and they look after each other.…

However, set against social expectations of the period, George and Lennie’s relationship is seen as unusual because of the dependence they hold on each other and the rarity of friendship between people at the time. Lennie depends on George to make the correct decisions for the pair, while George depends on Lennie for companionship and setting him on the right track to achieving their dream. Without each other, they wouldn’t have a future.…
