Another example that shows that he is brave is that he went to the Hades, which was feared by many. By his eloquence and cleverness Odysseus could get Nausicaa to assist him, and his devotion to his wife makes him so honorable He showed sensitivity when he met his mother and when he heard the song of the Trojan War.…
Odysseus A Different Type of Hero The Homeric epic, the Odyssey, is set in the peaceful years following the Trojan War, and concerns the returning heroes on their journeys home, in particular Odysseus of Ithaca. Odysseus is an epic hero; he displays courage, superior strength, and leadership, all qualities that people admire. While displaying these archetypal heroic traits he also displays his weaknesses as a man, particularly his excessive pride, which actually make him easy to relate to. So by demonstrating his strengths, and overcoming his weaknesses he becomes an epic hero, not only in Homer 's time but in the 21st century as well. Yet these archetypal heroic qualities are not his only heroic qualities, in order to win his battles and find his way home he needed to display other qualities such as cunning, shrewdness, and ingenuity.…
The first reason why Odysseus is an epic hero is because he is brave. According to Andrew Nordin "Odysseus en lists the help of loyal servants and fights cunningly as opposed to using brute strength and rash courage". He is never scare of battle and he will always be there for his people. Odysseus is a brave hero, he is a good fighter and he will not stop fighting till he has achieved…
Odysseus: The Anti-Hero Throughout Homer’s epic The Odyssey, Odysseus is a hero. In all myths and legends, a hero combats the “monsters.” In the typical story a hero is unselfish and fights to protect his people while the monsters are greedy powerful things that antagonize the people. Yet despite this typical storyline, if we read closely, we may conclude that Odysseus is actually the oppressive hero in many of these situations – provoking the “monsters” into fighting. The “monsters” in the Odyssey are innocent creatures that fight to protect themselves. Another reason Odysseus is not a satisfying hero of this story is because the main reason he pursues conflict is to maintain his own personal image and sense of pride, so that when he finally arrives home he will be cherished and honored – an honor that is unnecessary and inauthentic at the cost of so many lives. Even though it may be argued that Odysseus is the biggest hero in the book, there are many more reasons for why he should not be worth our admiration.…
Odysseus’s Leadership Skills Good leaders inspire those who follow with words as well as actions. There are,…
He valued his life above his crew’s, even though his crew constantly looked to him for direction and guidance. He even referred to his crewmembers as “fools”. He typically did what he wanted and did not care about the death of his crew, so long as he survived. For example, when they pass Scylla and Charybdis. Odysseus had a choice to either lose his whole ship to Charybdis, or only six men to Scylla. “Skylla out of the hollow vessel snatched six of my companions” (11.245-246). While it was better to just lose six men than all his men, a real hero would’ve found another route and a way for all his men to survive. A real hero would have taken the direct route to Ithaca and never been faced with this dilemma. Even after crewmembers died serving him, Odysseus ridiculed them and showed no respect. He did not even give a proper burial to his loyal crewmembers until he was forced to go back and correctly bury them. Odysseus did not care for the lives he lost; he survived and that’s all that mattered to him. The character trait Odysseus possessed of self-centeredness along with pride and arrogance was clearly revealed in the decision he made regarding…
Semper Fidelis "always faithful," became the Marine Corps motto in 1883. It guides Marines to remain faithful to the mission at hand, to each other, to the Corps and to their country, no matter what. A lot of people including myself consider the marines to be heroes. That is why I chose to compare and contrast them to the Epic hero Odysseus. They share many similarities such as their patriotism and high Intelligence. However, while sharing many similarities they share a key difference. Odysseus is sometimes “Hot Headed”, or and lets his emotions play a part in his decisions. Which is definitely not ideal, and can get him and his men in trouble at times.…
Odysseus lead a ship full of men ready to fight their way back to Ithaca, which is where Odysseus and his men are from. Odysseus and his men sail the seas for about 10 years before Odysseus reaches Ithaca, and gets to see his family and town back. His leadership was very admirable throughout their journey. Odysseus is an admirable hero because he display the following traits: loyalty, cleverness, and strength.…
Odysseus proves how heroic he is. He is a strong and intelligent when it comes to dealing with danger. By saying this, he prepares his men not to be afraid and to trust him that everything will be okay, just like all the other times he’s gotten them out of troublesome situations. When they finally reach the monsters, his men don’t chicken out and go forth with what he told them to do.…
If you had a friend that was brave, wise and powerful, wouldn’t you want them on your side? You should because attributes of a hero are those things more importantly a leader! Odysseus is a mortal man that is brave, proud, wise, powerful which is a foundation for an epic hero. However Odysseus has his flaws and that can be expected because no hero is perfect, and I don’t think he’s close, he killed like, a lot of people but if he was perfect we wouldn’t be talking about him anyway. He is not the perfect friend, soldier or guardian although this may be true he is a man who never gives up on his men, loyal to his family. Odysseus, the king of Ithaca and a decorated war hero in the Modern Western World because of his resilience, able to get through…
Odysseus showed courageousness throughout his whole journey. He always wanted to show bravery to his solders, so they would believe that they could defeat any challenge that would come their way. Even though he feared he stayed strong. His only goal was to get back home to his family and he was willing to do anything to…
The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word hero as “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” Society has certain standards set for how someone can become a hero, and the qualities they must possess to be considered one. In the epic poem The Odyssey, the main heroic figure Odysseus embarks on an epic journey through the known world, making him the epic hero of this story. Odysseus is an example of a controversy character when it comes to determining if he is a hero or not. While he falls under the required characteristics, his tragic flaws set him back.…
Ignorant Heroics If one were to walk methodically through an art gallery viewing the lovely artworks of the past you'd have to really stop and notice those of the Renaissance. These statues usually period pieces from Italian or French masters such as Donatello or Praxiteles were always sculpting realistic visions of the Gods such as Hermes. In a more popular example even modern man was made too look grand yet realistic in the sculpture of David done by Michelangelo. All depictions in Ancient Greece and Rome were truly to better enhance the world's view of the artistic human form. Art has always tried to mirror life but in the ever yet similarly famous tale Odyessus by Homer there is no question as to this myth's life mirroring image. However most myths are in this way, there doesn't seem to be many relatable things in these stories but the overral moral connects to the reader making the myth more realistic. In the main character this realism must be found in his character, in Odyessues's case there is a great lack of actual muscular heroic action. Especially if you compare it too previous myths like Hercules or Achillies; they were all muscle and not a ton of brain. Odyessus is more wit then might and he actually applies this to his survival, however there is no doubt that these talents are given by the Goddess Athena who watches over his every move. So if his gifts and talents are god's power then is he really a hero at all?…
Persuasive Essay: The Odyssey Homer’s Odysseus is a complicated character faced with mythic challenges as he leads his men on their journey home to Ithaca. As their leader, Odysseus makes the decisions that ultimately determine their fates. By the time he reaches the shores of Greece, Odysseus is the only one of his men to make it home. This fact alone points to flaws in his abilities to lead his men. Odysseus fails as a good leader because of three character flaws: opportunism, arrogance, and egoism.…
The Making of a Hero The Odyssey an epic poem by Homer (translated by Robert Fitzgerald) has many various themes woven throughout the story. One of my personal favorites is: falling into temptation will take you farther back than your starting point. You can see this theme portrayed as Odysseus struggles to find his home but when tempted stays to long with Circe. Or as they are almost home to Ithika and Odysseus’s crew opens the sack of winds. Also when they land on the island of the sun god and though they were told not to, eat some of his cattle.…
