The Odyssey is an epic poem about King Odysseus’ leaving his wife Penelope and infant son Telemachus behind to fight a nine year war but in doing so has angered “the Gods” particularly Poseidon as a result of Odysseus blinding his Cyclops son “earthquake god” (page 80, line 88) wand curses Odysseus’ ability to travel back home to Ithaca in a reasonable amount of time to his wife and now maturing son. As a result of Odysseus’ delayed return of ten years this poem unfolds over twenty years leaving Penelope to endure the exposure to many suitors taking up residence in the home she shared with her husband who are after her hand in marriage to gain the wealth of Odysseus.
Penelope never loses hope and faith in her loves return to her and her son. She responds to her suitors by not directly saying no to marriage but instead uses a lengthy delay tactic “she set up a great loom in the royal halls and she began to weave, and the weaving finespun, the yarns endless, and she would lead us on: Young men, my suitors, now that King Odysseus is no more, go slowly, keen as you are to marry me, until I can finish off this web….so my weaving won’t all fray and come to nothing. This is a shroud for old lord Laertes, for that day when the deadly fate that lays us out at last will take him down. Yes, if a man of such wealth should lie in state without a shroud for cover.” (page 96, lines 101-113) As depicted by the poem, Penelope would weave by day and unravel her work by candlelight at night therefore delaying her completion of the shroud and keeping her suitors at bay for three years.
Then, Penelope finds out through word from the herald Medon that the suitors were planning to kill her son Telemachus “They’re poised to cut Telemachuss down with bronze swords on his way back home. He’s sailed off, you see…for news of his father-to sacred Pylos first, then out to the sunny hills of Lacedaemon.” In response to this tragic news, Penelope prayed to Athena to protect her son. Athena sent Penelope a female form to visit her in her sleep “Sleeping, Penelope, your heart so wrung with sorrow? No need, I tell you, no, the gods who live at ease can’t bear to let you weep and rack your spirit. Your son will come home-it is decreed. He’s never wronged the gods in any way.

think Odysseus and his wife Penelope are perfect for each other and were meant to be together. I also believe Odysseus and Penelope's story is a very good example of how most military families function. I can relate to their story just a little bit because my husband was in the Air Force for six years. My husband served in the Air Froce from 2001 until 2007. He left for basic training just a couple months after the attack on September 11. The six years that he was in the military we got to experience one deployment.…

Malala Yousafzai said, “We were scared, but our fear was not as strong as our courage.” To some people, courage is seen in everyday acts of bravery. When a person does what seems to be a brave act during a calamity, without proper training, it is not bravery. It. Is. Courage. Courage is doing something that is dangerous and noble, but not irrational. It should also make you a better person, or the world a better place.…

A personal virtue that is a major theme in the epic, The Odyssey, is loyalty and perseverance. The best example of loyalty in of the epic, Penelope, who waited faithfully in Ithaca for 20 years for her husband, Odysseus’, to return. Odysseus’ son Telemachus, who also showed loyalty by standing by his father against the suitors who are after the throne. The two analytical lenses that I will use to interpret this epic, is the Psychological and the social class lens. The psychology lens focuses on the internal struggles of a character in a text. This could be seen by the three main characters, Odysseus, Telemachus, and Penelope. All three character, psychologically, have their mind set on their longing reunion throughout the epic which ties to…

Love is a powerful word. It has been told that through love, you can conquer all things. Like Odysseus, who traveled for years, for miles, and would endure any pain for the love of his family. Odysseus and Penelope had a very strong connection and marriage compared to others whom lived in this era. An era in which the definition of marriage was not one that we are quite used to. People of this age did not marry someone because they necessarily “loved” their spouse- but for the other things that the man or woman would bring to the table. Women looked for a suitor who would bring in the best gifts along with someone that would take care of the household. Men sought out for a certain reputation. They compete for the one they had laid eyes on by…

Telemachus is often overshadowed by Odysseus many heroic deeds and conquests; while Telemachus attempts to be just like his father, he never earns the full respect of those close to him and is never seen as a true figure of power or authority in others eyes or even in his own. In Book 2, the suitors mock Telemachus for his weakness and indecisiveness. Eurymachus writes off the omen of the fighting eagles, voicing his belief that Telemachus (whom he refers to as the boy [l. 212]) cannot follow through with his tiresome threats because he lacks the power to challenge the suitors. Later, Leocritus states that despite encouragement from the elders, Telemachus will never make the journey to uncover information about Odysseus; like Eurymachus, Leocritus doubts that Telemachus will act on his words. When Athena appears to Telemachus, she expresses her faith in him, which is apparently due only to the fact that he is Odysseus son. Possibly foreshadowing Telemachus ultimate failure to emulate his father, she says, Few sons are the equals of their fathers; most fall short. [l. 309-310]Consistent comparison to Odysseus leads even Telemachus to doubt his abilities.…
