Odysseus Roles In Homer's Odyssey
In the epic poem the Odyssey, Homer's main character Odysseus portrays three different roles. Unfortunately, not all of Odysseus’s characteristics are outstanding for a biblical worldview. The reason for this is because the manner in which he handles himself as a military leader, a husband and occasionally a father, is not the manner in which a Christian should handle himself. On the other hand, Odysseus’s relationships that he has with his army, wife and family are one that are mostly carried out in the manner of a Christian. It is strange that Odysseus cares deeply for his men and as well as his son, but does not seem to be as deeply connected to his wife
Through there are several different aspects of the roles that Odysseus plays as a military leader, a husband and a father that were noble, there are also many other aspects that would not be considered that way from a biblical perspective.

Odysseus is an excellent military leader in many respects, mostly since he is constantly proving how loyal he his to his men, and is selfless in nearly every situation he faces. In addition, Odysseus genuinely cares about his men

His actions as a military leader are ones that are attractive, as a husband, he did not handle himself in a Christlike manner and as a father his behavior was one that could be looked up to. When he is portrayed as a military leader, he treats his men fairly and cares about the lives of each of them. However, as a husband, Odysseus is unfaithful, but when he plays the roles of a father, he is only concerned with the reunion of his family. Unfortunately, Odysseus does not always handle himself with the perspective of a Christian worldview, especially when it counts. While Odysseus does not follow in the footsteps of a Christian in some of the roles he plays, there are some aspects of his leadership and fatherly involvement that would be considered

    Odysseus Cunningness

Odysseus demonstrates his resourcefulness and cunningness, but most definitely serves as no hero through several episodes of his pridefulness, unfaithfulness, and ruthless murdering. Odysseus shows qualities of a narcissist as he focuses on himself and not on the greater good. In Book IX, Odysseus and his men go to the Cyclopes' island and visits one of their caves: "We soon reached his cave but didn't find him [the Cyclopes]. [...] We went inside the cave and looked around. [...] At first, my comrades urged me to grab some cheeses and return, then drive the lambs and kids out of their pens back to our swift ship and cross the water. [...] I was keen to see the man in person and find out if he would show me hospitality (Book IX Lines 167-182).…

As great as he was, Odysseus still had some weaknesses his moments of bad decisions (taunting Polyphemus, being tempted by the Sirens, staying on Circe's island, his extreme violence toward the suitors that almost causes a war between himself and his subjects once he returns home). He seems to be a very proud man, given his tendency to taunt or bait his enemies and to feel very offended when his character is put into question--for example, in Phaecia when the impudent youth says that he isn't strong enough to throw a discus and has never worked a day in his life.…

A big reason Odysseus would not fit this role is that he is too conceited. An example of this is when Odysseus yells back at Polyphemphus saying “’O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions? Puny, am I, in a caveman’s hands. How do you like the beating that we gave you, you damned cannibal? Eater of guest under your roof! Zeus and the gods have paid you!”(Homer, page 768) for revenge believing has in the clear and almost gets him and his mates killed by the gruesome Cyclopes. Another incident is he decided to not tell his men his fortune that he would be the only man to return home and the rest would die, and this causes six of his men to die at the straight, and the rest to die after starving and finally deciding to murder Helios’s cattle. Also he could have saved his men by simply telling his men his fortune and giving them a chance to survive. Next he would do anything to return to his home to return back to his kingdom, even after everything that happens he stills try to return home, like his fortune, the Cyclopes, Circe’s island, the straight, and other reasons. A comparison you can make that tell a difference from him to another fictional hero is "Batman" in certain citations; an example of this is that Batman would put others ahead of his own good. And Odysseus would give up others for a silly return home that doesn't affect much.…
