Odysseus Is A Dishonest
The odyssey is a very complex story. But there are multiple things that are very clear. One of those things is that Odysseus does not deserve a hero award. Many people might think he is but he is dishonest, he doesn’t use communication, and he doesn’t know how to put himself last. He is always worried about himself and not his crew. These things make him a bad leader and not a hero.
First, Odysseus is dishonest. He is dishonest because he didn’t tell his men that when they had to face Scylla that he would have to give up six of his best men. He didn’t give his men a chance to try and fight back. According to the text it states “that was all, and it brought them round to action. But as I sent them on toward Scylla, I told them nothing, they

Odysseus didn’t use communication when he led his men into the cyclops cave. His men told him not to go into the cave because they knew something was bound to go wrong. But he didn’t listen to them and he went in anyways. According to the text it states “we beached there, and I told the crew to stand by and keep watch over the ships; as for myself I took twelve of my best fighters and went ahead.” This proves Odysseus doesn’t use communication because he told his crew what to do, he didn’t ask what they think they should do. He didn’t use teamwork.
Lastly, Odysseus doesn’t know how to put himself last. Odysseus doesn’t put himself last when he was taunting the cyclopes. This means he put his men in danger, he knew he would make the cyclopes mad. According to the text it states “why bait the beast again? Let him alone. That tidal wave he made on the first throw all about beached us.” Even though he saved his men by creating an escape plan he still put them in danger. Which shows he was worried about himself and not his crew.
To wrap everything up, the reasons Odysseus doesn’t deserve a hero award is because he is dishonest, he doesn’t use communication, and he doesn’t know when to put himself last. He was dishonest about Scylla. He didn’t use communication when he led his men into the cyclopes cave. He didn’t put himself last when he was taunting the cyclopes, he had put his men in danger. This concludes he does not deserve a hero

Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

In book 9, he claims that the Cyclopes are “louts”, and then says“A wineskin full I brought along… for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon us soon.” The above quote demonstrate that he knew the Cyclopes were dangerous and unreasonable, but regardless of the risks, he chose to meet the Cyclops. After the he and the crew escaped, only a handful voted that he get the prized ram as his meal, which proves that they felt his leadership was lacking. Their trust is continually lost as ships and crew members are lost, and the men finally decide to ignore him. They are not to blame however, after being put in danger so often, it was only logical that the men began thinking for themselves. To them, Odysseus had failed as a captain because he didn’t tell them all he knew, he purposefully kept information to himself. After learning of the three beasts, the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis, he only tells them of the Sirens, believing that “They would have dropped their oars again, in panic, to roll for cover under the decking.” This was a tremendous mistake, the men had been loyal to Odysseus for nearly twenty years, and he didn’t trust them to fight to return home. Since the men didn’t know of the beasts, they assumed he recklessly led them towards their deaths, which was not far from the truth. Odysseus considered disobeying Circe and fighting Scylla, which led them…

Odysseus was a leader who would sacrifice anything for his crew just like when he put the spike into the cyclops eye as it said "Just so that his eyeball hissed around the spike." (P.768). Which explained his courageous act against the cyclops. There was other signs of courage for example, when he sacrificed himself for the crews safety agains the Sirens "They tied me up, plumb amidship, back to the mast." (P.784). Which is another sign of courage and shows how much of a hero Odysseus really is.…

In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is a hero because of how he got all the suitors out of the house. I believe that he is a hero for that because of the way that they just moved in and tried to marry his wife. Also that they were eating all of his animals fruit and other things also that they were drinking all of his wine. They were also mean to his servants and to son which made him mad at them. Then when he came they did not know and they were treating him like that he was nothing and that he should die. So that is the reason why he had to kill all of the suitors.…

Odysseus is a leader and he puts himself in harm's way those are two reasons I believe he is a hero. I’m not saying that you need to be a leader to be a hero, I’m saying that in the story Odysseus took charge and put himself in harm's way. Heroes tend to put themselves in harm's way quite often, and leaders tend to be put in tough situations. War heroes become heroes in one of the most dangerous places to be. They are tested and they prevailed, some of them are heroes. They come out on top and we may never forget them. They were put to the test and they passed. Odysseus went to war and he was tested there. He was the one…

The general populous has hailed Odysseus as the epitome of the epic hero for several centuries, but to the modern reader, he comes off as anything but. While he was extremely driven by one goal, getting back home to his family, he performed some not-so heroic deeds on his quest and once he arrived back in Ithaca. Odysseus had many affairs and was disloyal to his wife, slaughtered hundreds of people in the name of righteousness, and above all, exemplifies hubris, or arrogant pride. These traits and behaviors are not acceptable for anyone, especially a person considered to be and hailed as a hero. Odysseus is not the epitome of an epic hero.…
