Odysseus Essay
In order to be a good leader you must have good traits, but sometimes they might have some flaws. Such as Odysseus, even though Odysseus is a good leader and has good characteristics he does have some flaws in which I’m going to explain you. First what makes Odysseus a good leader is his strength, courage, and determination. In the story Odysseus shows strength when he has his men tie him up to listen to the Sirens. “Therefore you are to tie me up, tight as splint, erect along the mast, lashed to the mast and if I shout and beg to be unties, take more turns of the rope to muffle me.” Odysseus shows courage by pep talking his men into going to Scylla and Charybdis . “ Friends, have we never been in danger before this? More fearsome is it now, then when the Cyclops penned us in his cave? What power he had! Did I not keep my nerve and us my wits to find a way out for us.” This is when I realized that Odysseus was courageous. Lastly Odysseus shows determination by never giving up what he has started. “Now by the gods, I drove my big hand spike deep in the embers, charring it again, and cheered my men along with battle talk to keep their courage up: no quitting now.” These characteristics show that Odysseus is a good leader Even though Odysseus is a good leader he still has some flaws. Such as, cockiness, selfishness, and foolishness. Odysseus is very cocky. For example, with the Cyclops he could of just kept his mouth shut, but he had to have the last word. ”Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son whose homes on Ithaca” Odysseus is also not strict enough. His men are constantly disrespecting him and he doesn’t tell them anything. An example of that could be with the winds.” Odysseus and his men sail to Aeolia where Aeolus, king of the winds, sends Odysseus on his way with a gift: a sack containing all the winds except the favorable west wind. Odysseus and his men (also known as the Ithankans) landed on the Aeaean island. The Aeaean island was ruled by Aeolus, the god of the winds. The Ithankans were welcomed and stayed there for a month. After one month the Ithankans began to depart to Ithka. Before they departed Aeolus gave Odysseus a bag of winds. This bag would help Odysseus and his men on their journey home. Odysseus did not tell his fellow men what the bag contains. As Odysseus and his men were arriving at Ithka Odysseus fell asleep after driving the ship for nine days. While he was asleep the men opened the bag thinking it was some type of treasure. When the bag was opened winds rushed everywhere and blew the ship back undoing the nine days of sailing. Odysseus sailed to…

It’s important to complete actions that can change one’s fate, but also equally important to demonstrate self-control. Without the urge of indulging in our desires, there would be no test of our moral and physical ability for characters like Odysseus to show his growth, and self-control and even a character like Lazarus who is hunted down show moral characteristics to demonstrate that too. While Odysseus and Lazarus are not perfect men, they both show how they struggled and overcome their flaws to learn a moral lesson from the gods and the threat of mortal or god is a dangerous challenge to face as well.…

Odysseus, in Homer’s The Odyssey, displays both strong and weak leadership skills in certain situations. Odysseus stays protective and caring but isn’t very trusting or open to his crew. He doesn’t tell his crew about what the prophet said, and what was in the bag from the Wind King. When the crew was on the Island of the Sun God, Odysseus blatantly said for them not to touch the cattle. Yet he failed to explain the consequences. Since his actions illustrate both strong and weak leadership, each even affected the way Odysseus would lead the crew.…

One trait that Odysseus has is being a great leader. One way that he is a great leader is because he had won the war against the Trojans. The way he won was that he had a brilliant idea of making a Trojan horse. The reason he made a Trojan horse is so he can hide inside of it and attack the Trojan. Another reason why Odysseus is a great leader is because he had helped his crew through many obstacles. One example is when Odysseus and his crew were approaching Scylla and Charybdis and his crew scared because of the white smoke. So then Odysseus…

A sign of Odysseus's leadership is when he was facing the heard ships from the Cattle of the Sun God. He knew that they had eaten the cattle so he said "I withdrew to the interior to pray the gods, for hope." (P.789) This shows that he knew that his men had messed up so he decided to help them by praying to the gods which shows that he tried to help his men. Another sign of leadership is when he sacrificed himself to keep his men safe. "I carried the wax along the line , and laid it thick into their ears." (P.784) This shows how much he cares about his men and how he will sacrifice himself for his crew.…

However, the fact that Odysseus does have some flaws cannot be rejected. These flaws include the fact that he loses a lot his men (Book IX 59-61, IX 287-290, X 118-133, XII 243-246, XII 416-419) and the fact that he boasts about himself especially when he reveals his name after defeating the Cyclops (Book IX 500-504). Nevertheless, this does nothing but adds to the idea of Odysseus being more evidence of him being a hero. He is a mortal hero, a human, and humans have…

You may be asking yourself, how can he be a bad leader if he is the reason they won at Troy and got home? Well the answer is that it took them 10 years to get back to Ithaca. It took long because of Odysseus doing horrible things such as telling Polyphemus his name. Because of Odysseus’ doing this, its causes him and his men to be a target for the gods. Another example of this is when Odysseus receives a bag of wind from Aeolus and he does not communicate with his men and causing them to think that it is a bag of riches. So you can not blame them for being curious because after all it is in our nature as human…

These flaws include the fact that he loses his men and the fact that he boasts about himself and commits blasphemy toward Poseidon when he says, "I am sure that even great Poseidon will never give you back the eye you lost" (Odyssey, Book IX, page 185). Nevertheless, this does nothing but adds to the idea of Odysseus being the ideal hero in the ancient Greek society. He is a mortal hero, a human, and humans have flaws. This again goes back to where we talk about the transition in the Greek society. The Greeks now embrace their mortality, they are not afraid of it. Even with his flaws, Odysseus achieves his goals and he is definitely the ideal hero for many generations to follow. The people can look to Odysseus as being a hero that they can relate to; unlike the previous perfect and unrealistic heroes, such as Hercules, that could only be…

His intelligence and strength allow him to get out of difficult situations, but his one flaw that was bringing Odysseus down was his hubris. The whole time Odysseus was trying to get home, he had many opportunities to display these traits, for example giving Polyphemus the wine to put him asleep showed his intelligence because this was the best way to injure the giant while causing the least amount of death. When he hung from the fig tree and waited for his ship, or being trapped in Polyphemus’s cave are all obstacles that he had to overcome. Odysseus overcame these obstacles because he is a hero and heroes overcome problems that come their way. Odysseus is not a superhero however, he is just a normal person that overcomes mistakes and problems that he is faced with. Everyone knows about superheroes and heroes and that they share similar principles except anyone can be a hero, but no one can be a…

Odysseus has the standard qualities that make him a hero; strength, bravery, courage, nobility. He is also the embodiment of the standards and morals of his culture. But his most redeeming quality is his intellect. He proves time and time again that not only is he smart but also extremely clever. He shows this not only by openly evaluating situations but also by outwitting his opponents, such as the Cyclops.
