Odysseus Cunningness
Odysseus demonstrates his resourcefulness and cunningness, but most definitely serves as no hero through several episodes of his pridefulness, unfaithfulness, and ruthless murdering. Odysseus shows qualities of a narcissist as he focuses on himself and not on the greater good. In Book IX, Odysseus and his men go to the Cyclopes' island and visits one of their caves: "We soon reached his cave but didn't find him [the Cyclopes]. [...] We went inside the cave and looked around. [...] At first, my comrades urged me to grab some cheeses and return, then drive the lambs and kids out of their pens back to our swift ship and cross the water. [...] I was keen to see the man in person and find out if he would show me hospitality (Book IX Lines 167-182). …show more content…
Odysseus feels proud of blinding Polyphemus since he goes to the lengths of proclaiming his name for credit which soon proves itself as an idiotic move as well because Poseidon then destroys their ship after having heard Polyphemus’ prayer about …show more content…
Odysseus murders all the suitors even after one promised to pay him back: “Eurymachus, if you offered me all the goods you got from your own fathers, everything which you now own [...]not even then would I hold back my hands from slaughter, not until the suitors pay for all their arrogance."As he did so, lord Odysseus shot an arrow. It struck him in the chest beside the nipple and drove the swift shaft straight down into his liver" (Book XXII, Lines 64-70). While the suitors deserve punishment, none of them endanger Odysseus in the current moment. However, Odysseus still chooses to end their lives full of anger and with a vengeful heart instead of in a just manner. Furthermore, after they die he makes his maids clean up their bodies, and hangs all the maids afterwards. These actions show themselves as excessive and cruel because the maids, while lazy, behaved much better than the suitors, serve as no threat, and at the very least, they were undeserving of death especially to such a cruel extent. Also, showing absolutely no mercy, makes him a hypocrite as he too proves his irresponsibility as none of his crew members survived. Odysseus, while intelligent and persistent, his infidelity, humongous ego, and ruthless murdering kill any chance of him being a

In Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus uses his power to corrupt and persuade his shipmates. Odysseus is often portrayed as the hero of the story, even though he constantly used his power and authority to endanger his crewmates and others around him. An example of this can be conveyed in The Odyssey when Odysseus convinces his men to follow him into Polyphemus's cave. When the cyclops, Polyphemus, notices Odysseus and his mates, he first confronts them and demands to know why they're there. Odysseus…

Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

Odysseus should feel justified for his actions for killing the suitors. After being gone for twenty years and coming home to people living in his house. Also trying to take the only things he got left like his son and wife. Odysseus should feel more justified for killing those who were involved with the wooers so now he knows who is loyal and who is not. Those are reasons why Odysseus should feel justified after killing all of those people.…

However, the fact that Odysseus does have some flaws cannot be rejected. These flaws include the fact that he loses a lot his men (Book IX 59-61, IX 287-290, X 118-133, XII 243-246, XII 416-419) and the fact that he boasts about himself especially when he reveals his name after defeating the Cyclops (Book IX 500-504). Nevertheless, this does nothing but adds to the idea of Odysseus being more evidence of him being a hero. He is a mortal hero, a human, and humans have…

Odysseus has done some not so clever actions, but he has also done some heroic ones. Some people believe that Odysseus was too prideful and foolish, but I believe that he should be defined as a hero. Whenever Odysseus and his crew faced many challenges, Odysseus always looked out for his shipmates and would help them when needed. He showed loyalty and cared for his crew and I believe that is a trait that heroes should have.…

"Cyclops, if any mortal man ever asks you who it was that inflicted upon your eye this shameful blinding, tell him that you were blinded by Odysseus, sacker of cities. Laertes is his father, and he makes his home on Ithaca” (Homer 500-505). Homer’s work of historical fiction, The Odyssey, is the sequel to his earlier story The Iliad. The Odyssey follows Odysseus after the events of the 10 year Trojan war and his long journey home. He clashes with many monsters and it always seems that his pride gets the better of him. The quote above is Odysseus bragging to Polyphemus that he had blinded him, showing how prominent his ego is after clashing with the cyclops. This ego and several other mistakes lead to Odysseus’s entire crew being dead and taking 20 years to return home. Odysseus is not a hero. He was unfaithful to his wife and all of his crew is dead.…

Odysseus shows he is undeserving of the admiration he receives through his selfish, merciless, and disloyal actions as well as his lack of leadership and reliance on the Gods. Throughout his trip home, Odysseus faced countless obstacles and acted cowardly when trying to overcome them. Whether it was his willingness to betray his wife by sleeping with another woman in order to progress his trip or killing his own men when they disobeyed, Odysseus is not heroic. Although fame may bring you the title of hero, it is unjust to be considered heroic if you are a terrible…

In the novel, it is clearly shown how Odysseus got his men into many life threatening situations, for example “Humbly those wolves and lions with mighty paws fawned on our men- who met their yellow eyes and feared them.” (lines 547-549). It really is quite fascinating how Odysseus managed to get all of his men killed from multiple occasions. It seems like he could not learn after numerous failures to save the lives of his men. It it almost sickening to know Odysseus talked about these vicious attacks with no remorse for the event. It is almost as if he could use it to tell another story in his basking of glory at the hands of King Alnicus and the Phaeacians. It most certainly is displeasing to see how Odysseus is celebrated after having all his men killed solely under his responsibility.…

Odysseus is not a modern day hero because he tricked his men into thinking that he has logos. He convinced his men to be as brave as he is when they were going to fight through scylla. He does this because he knew he whould not get eaten while his men whould. as shown in this quote he gives his men ethos to get them ready “Well, I walked up and down from bow to stern, trying to put heart into them, standing over every oarsmen, saying gently, have we ever been in danger before this.” after he told them this they went to scylla and fought. Odysseus also has bravery when he stabbed the cyclops in his eye, he told him that his name is nobody to trick him. he also disguised his men as sheep so that they could get out of the cave. But one reason that is…

A big reason Odysseus would not fit this role is that he is too conceited. An example of this is when Odysseus yells back at Polyphemphus saying “’O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions? Puny, am I, in a caveman’s hands. How do you like the beating that we gave you, you damned cannibal? Eater of guest under your roof! Zeus and the gods have paid you!”(Homer, page 768) for revenge believing has in the clear and almost gets him and his mates killed by the gruesome Cyclopes. Another incident is he decided to not tell his men his fortune that he would be the only man to return home and the rest would die, and this causes six of his men to die at the straight, and the rest to die after starving and finally deciding to murder Helios’s cattle. Also he could have saved his men by simply telling his men his fortune and giving them a chance to survive. Next he would do anything to return to his home to return back to his kingdom, even after everything that happens he stills try to return home, like his fortune, the Cyclopes, Circe’s island, the straight, and other reasons. A comparison you can make that tell a difference from him to another fictional hero is "Batman" in certain citations; an example of this is that Batman would put others ahead of his own good. And Odysseus would give up others for a silly return home that doesn't affect much.…

Even a hero has character flaws that make him more human than hero because of their good traits being weighed down by their bad traits. That is what keeps Odysseus in The Odyssey from standing out as the hero he was. The Odyssey was written by Homer and it is an epic poem. The Odyssey is about a young war hero, Odysseus, who has to make a journey home after the ten year Trojan War. He needs to arrive home before his son grows up because that is when his wife will move on to another man that will inherit his kingdom. Odysseus, the protagonist can be indirectly characterized both positively and negatively because he is both smart and arrogant.…
