I will upload each text to the text types folder, just in case you misplace your own hardcopy.The top stairs of the Grand Staircase in Bryce Canyon National Park are shown above. Grand Staircase is a regionally huge sequence of sedimentary rock layers that stretch from the Grand Canyon (lower and oldest layers), north through Zion National Park (middle layers) and finally into Bryce Canyon. The eroded hoodoos in the foreground and mid-ground are the more weather resistant remains of sedimentary mudstones/siltstones of the Claron Formation. Pink and orange colors of this rather recent rock formation are attributable to heavy oxides of iron and manganese. Differential erosion resulting primarily from freeze-thaw cycles helped to shape the fascinating hoodoos, found here below the edge of Cenozoic-aged rocks of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Onderzoek AMC naar medicatie bij angst, depressie en ADHD ePOD is een wetenschappelijk onderzoeksproject naar de effecten van medicijnen op de hersenen in ontwikkeling. Binnen ePOD vinden twee studies plaats waarin we kijken we naar de effecten van fluoxetine (een antidepressivum) en van methylfenidaat, dat bij ADHD wordt voorgeschreven. Bij jongeren is nog niet veel bekend over de effecten en bijwerkingen van deze medicijnen en dus is het van groot belang dat dit onderzoek wordt gedaan.

    Drug therapy is the main treatment for mental disorders and is based on the assumption that chemical imbalance is at the root of the problem. One type of drug is anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., minor tranquillizers called BZs such as Valium. These have a calming effect by inhibiting the nervous system and causing muscles to relax. BZs work by enhancing the action of the chemical messenger GABA, which acts to calm brain activity. Another type of drug is anti-depressant drugs (e.g. MAOIs, TCAs and SSRIs. These improve mood by increasing the availability of neurotransmitters such as serotonin. For example, MAOIs block the action of an enzyme that breaks down serotonin, so increasing its availability in the nervous system. The last type of drug is anti-psychotic drugs (e.g. major tranquillizers such as the phenothiazines). These sedate and alleviate symptoms such as hallucinations, of the person suffering from psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. They seem to work by blocking the D2 receptor for dopamine. Another type of therapy is ECT (Electro-convulsive therapy). This is when a patient lies on a bed, in loose clothes, and receives an anaesthetic and muscle relaxant before treatment. ECT involves passing a current (70-130 volts) through the brain for approximately half a second. This is done by fixing electrodes to the patient’s temples. This is now mainly used to treat people with severe depression and treatments are given typically two or three times a week for three r four weeks. Over 11,000 patients in England and Wales were given ECT in 1999 (Johnstone 2003) and two thirds of these patients were women.…

Most of the children diagnosed with ADHD have received prescriptions to use stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall and Vyvanse, which are known to tremendously improve individuals’ lives that suffer with ADHD however these drugs can result to an individual to have anxiety, psychosis, and can lead to addiction. Many of people are floored at the astronomical numbers such as a professor of Yale that studies medicine where he states “Mild symptoms are being diagnosed so readily, which goes well beyond the disorder and the zone of ambiguity to pure enhancement of children who are otherwise healthy” (Dr. W. To make matters worse there will be a larger number of teenagers that are going to be prescribed Adderall, Vyvanse, or Ritalin in the foreseeable future because the APA (American Psychiatric Association) is considering changing the meaning and definitions of ADHD to allow room for more individuals to be diagnosed with the disorder which means more will be treated with stimulants.
