October Sky: Challenges the Rockey Boys Faced.
OCTOBER SKY

Through out the movie October Sky the Rocket Boys faced many obstacles that they didn't always pass through quickly. But in the end they overcame those and proved to be successful. Through these unsuccessful and successful events the Rocket Boys challenged themselves and the people around them to believe in the unbelievable. If everyone thought they were to grow up to be miners like everyone else in the town of Coalwood, then they certainly proved them wrong.

One thing that they faced that was unsuccessful was the launching of their first rocket. In launching their first rocket all that happened was they blew up a section of Homer's fence. Many people would have just given up there, figuring they'd caused enough trouble and were unlikely to make one fly anyways. But not Homer. He sought out a fellow classmate, Quentin, who knew about rockets for help.

With Quentin's help the boys were able to make a rocket that flew, but this brings us to another down point. Whilst the rocket flew, it flew right through the mine, thoroughly upsetting Homer's father, and causing the boys to be banned from launching rockets on company ground. This may not seem like a big deal, except for the fact that the company owned the entire town that they lived in. So from then on the boys had to go 8 miles, out of town to launch anymore rockets.

One day the boys were arrested for starting a fire in Welch with their rockets. Once again many would have given up at this point. Said that it was fun while it lasted. For a while they did too. Homer's dad got hurt not long after the arrest, and Homer dropped out of school to go work in the mine to help support the family. One day after his father was better and back working in the mine Homer visited Ms. Riley. After that visit he started reading about rockets again one night, and with a little help from Quentin was able to use math to prove that they hadn't started the fire in Welch and was able to find the one unaccounted for rocket. This was one of his many successes because in doing it he cleared Rocket Boy's names.

After this Homer enrolled back in school, because in order to enter the science fair you have to be an enrolled student. The Rocket Boys were a success and won the fair. Then in Nationals, after overcoming parts of their display being stolen, the Rocket Boys had another success-----they won the nation science fair.

I think this movie tells the viewer that if you work at something and love what you do, then great things can happen. I think this because the boys lived in a town where their futures were decided for them. They would all grow up and work in the coalmine. A few might get out and go to college on a football scholarship, and that was all. But Homer refused to accept that. Ms. Riley refused to accept that. And eventually Homer's mother refused to accept that. The boys persevered and they all got out of their pre-maid mine destiny to go on to college and do what they chose with their lives.

I think that the movie was sound in its advice, because it wasn't just another of those, "you can do whatever you want kids" type movies, where everything just happens to work out perfectly. They showed that it takes a lot of work to get where you want to go, but in the end its all worth it. It shows that there are going to be times where it seems all hope is lost, and that that's when you have to stay strong, maybe become a little creative and overcome it if you truly want to succeed.

So in conclusion, although the boys had many unsuccessful times they came through. They worked their way around the obstacles they face. They persevered and eventually came out on top.

“An exciting adventure.” That was the mentality of boys and men all over the North and South, leading up to the Civil war. Seeing an alternative to the monotonous farm life, many men were eager and filled with anticipation at the thought of being in a war. In The Boys War by Jim Murphy, these men and boys learn the truth about war. Many preconceptions are shattered, and fantasies are broken wide open by reality. One common misconception was that the fighting would be constant, but this was not the case. When soldiers were not marching, being drilled, or in the midst of a skirmish, there was often leisure time. During these periods, men and boys were free to pursue activities and games. Gambling, pulling pranks, and occasional fraternization were three pastimes of men and boys alike during the war.…

After hear some of the things that were being said and hearing how Gene is the cause of his leg breaking Finny ran, not wanting to accept the evil in his friend. Then these separate sounds collided into the general tumult of his body falling clumsily down the white marble stairs. (Knowls 97)." We learn that while Randy did everything in his power to achieve all of his childhood dreams, not everything was accomplished. We learn the power of failing and how that can also help achieve your dreams. We learn that sometimes your dreams do not come true but may lead you to something you may not have realized you wanted in the first place. The theme of his lecture was about how having childhood dreams and the road to achieve these dreams may be blocked by “brick walls” (cmu.edu) but teaches that “brick walls are there for a reason, they let us prove how badly we want things”. (cmu.edu) That is one of many inspirational quotes given by Randy in his 75 minute lecture.…

The main plot and both the novel and the Simpson’s episode are the same. A group of children strand on an island where they turn from civilized to barbaric. Still there are a lot of important parts from the novel missing in the episode. An important part at the beginning of the storyline is when the group chooses Ralph as the leader. ‘Ralph counted. I’m chief then’ This is important because it shows democracy which shows there is still civilization and that they function as a society. Furthermore it creates tension between Ralph and Jack since he also wants to be the leader and therefor shows the beginning of the civilization versus savagery. The part of voting for the leader should be added to the Simpson’s episode to do more justice to the novel. Another important part that’s missing in the episode’s plot is seeing a ship on the horizon while the fire is out. This should be in the episode because it shows the different reactions of Ralph an Jack to a missing change of being rescued. Finally in the episode civilization comes back when they find out the monster is a wild boar. ‘So the children learned how to function as a society and eventually they were rescued’ This is really different from the novel because in the novel the breakdown of civilization only gets worse. That’s why this part of the Simpson’s episode should be left out of it. To put these parts into the episode we should take parts out to let it still be an episode. The part of Homer shows contrast between civilized world the breakdown of civilization on the island. But…

The Author of this book was the main character himself. What I think he was trying to do at all was tell his amazing story of how he got to be one of the biggest influences in NASA and other space influenced industries. What he might be saying is just follow your dream, despite weaknesses you may have. Academically Homer Hickam excelled in the language arts (thus the book, Rocket boys), but he struggled in the sciences and mathematical areas. Because of his love for rocketry he went on to achieve his…

One of Homer’s main obstacles was his community who made fun of him and doubted him for a very long time. That is, until they saw Homer’s first successful rocket launch. When the boys go to school, all the other kids would constantly ostracize them because everyone knows that “the jocks are the only ones who get to go to college.” And that is because without a football scholarship “the rest of ‘em will go to work in the mines.” Homer, Quentin, Roy and O’Dell did not have a very good start with their rockets. Their first, did not take off, the second took off in the air a bit but then went straight into the mining area. With that rocket, Homer’s father told them not to shoot off any more rockets on company property. Even with Leon Bolden’s help, they did not get the right type of rocket shape, or formula to get the rockets to go straight up and fly as high as possible for as long as possible. The first time the town showed up for a rocket launch, the…
