REACTION PAPER ON OCTOBER SKY

October Sky is the perfect movie for inspiring young people to follow their dreams. It follows the story of Homer Hickam who dreamt of building and designing his own rocket. Inspired by the launching of the Soviet satellite Sputnik in the late 1950's, his curiosity was sparked and along with his friends, they set out to make their own rocket. They were all passionate about their work and took it very seriously. Their teacher, Miss Riley, who wanted them to have better lives instead of becoming coal miners like most people in their town, further encouraged them. The Rocket Boys, as they were known, were determined to build this rocket and did not easily give up despite the numerous failed attempts. Being observant was needed by the Rocket Boys in doing their experiment. Patience was also seen in them because even though people made fun of them, they were not deterred and still continued with what they were doing. By looking at the wrong things they did and examining and analyzing their data thoroughly, they were able to perfect the rocket launching. They were resourceful in looking for ways to come up with the funds they needed for some of the rocket parts. They even went to the extent of making use of old railroad tracks to earn the money. When they were banned from performing their experiment in Coalwood, they found a spot miles away from their town so they could continue their project without people getting hurt. They were also optimistic in completing their project and of getting scholarships from universities so that they could become more educated people.
When the police thought that their rocket caused a forest fire in a nearby town, the Rocket Boys were blamed and arrested. Still, they were open-minded to this possibility but were able to disprove this in the end when Homer figured out the trajectory of the rocket and was able to locate it. He was also able to provide proof and had all of them cleared of any charges.

This is one example of the many risks Homer faced when pursuing this desire for deigning and building rockets. Despite the trouble Homer got into, the growth rewards he felt from seeing his rocketing technique start to improve would not let Homer give up on his passion. The boys relocated and made improvements on their launch site. Some people heard about what the boys were doing through word of mouth and decided to show up for the first launch at the new site. The boys lit the rocket off and ran back to their newly made shelter just in time to see their rocket blast off and soar up to fifty feet and came racing back down to where the people had their cars parked narrowly avoiding one. It was here discovered that the fuel the rocket used was not dry enough to do what they hoped. Realizing this problem allowed them to make a drastic improvement. It would be another two weeks until their next rockets would be ready to fly. The boys used innovation to build a guidance system to aid in the flight’s control. When at the field the boys launched their next rocket and it went straight up higher than the boys could estimate. The next innovation was a new fuel made by melting…

Change is Constant, is one of the High Five Principles. In life, many things change constantly and adaptability is very important. In October Sky, the beginning of the space age is announced with the Sputnik Satellite is launched. “How about I believe in the unlucky ones?” this could arguably be the most important line in the entire film, October Sky. This teacher, Miss Riley, recognizes the potential in every student, not only the ones with visible ability. This should be the goal of every teacher. Miss Riley not only provides the boys with hope, but also with endless supports as they proceed in their rocket building. Teachers have the greatest gift in the world—the ability to help shape a student’s life. They can use that to present a world of opportunities to those who may not have had any. This was true in October Sky; when the “Rocket Boys”, a group of high school students from a small failing mining community, were given an amazing opportunity to be more than they…

With Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn are great authors who give us true stories of girls and woman from Africa and Asia and their extraordinary struggles. We view the Cambodian teenager sold into sex slavery and an Ethiopian woman who suffered devastating injuries in childbirth. Drawing on the breadth of their combined reporting experience, Kristof and WuDunn view our world with anger, sadness, clarity, and, ultimately, hope. Through these stories, Kristof and WuDunn help us see that the key to economic progress lies in unleashing women’s potential. They make clear how so many people have helped to do just that, and how we can each do our part. In much of the world, the greatest unemployed economic resource is the female half of the population. Countries such as China have prospered precisely because they emancipated women and brought them into the formal economy.…
