Ocimum Basilicum Case Study
Ocimum basilicum, commonly known as ‘Indian basil’, is an indigenous south Indian species (Bhasin, 2012). Among over 150 basil species belonging to the genus Ocimum, two most widely grown species for essential oil production are holy basil (Ocimum sanctum L.) and sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.). Ocimum basilicum, an erect highly branched aromatic perennial herb of family Lamiaceae is well known for its sweet basil oil and is widely distributed throughout India. This species is believed to be originated in India and some neighbouring countries. In the plains of north India, south India and Assam it may; however be grown as both Kharif and Rabi crops. In actual practice, about 30-35 Kg/ha oil, corresponding to 12-13 Kg of flower oil and 18-22 …show more content…
bullita was observed throughout the year. However, its incidence was highest during the months Au¬gust to December, moderate from January to April and low from May to June. The pest hibernates in adult stage in scar¬city of food and adverse (cold) conditions. Highest popula¬tion 67.3 (range 60-72) was found in September (Sathe, 2014).

Temperature and humidity both climatic factors influence the population built up and survivability of lace bug at Saharanpur (Jain and Dhiman, 2011). The lace bug preferred to live and feed on O. basilicum throughout the year except during autumn season. In winter, few nymphs were seen in aggregation in the cavity of rolled leaves to avoid cold weather.
Dhiman and Dutta (2013) reported that at Saharanpur the population of C. bullita infest the host plants during July to November and from April to May. The population built up started on O. basilicum during first week of April and attained peak in September – November.
C. bullita can be effectively controlled by spraying the crop with 0.03 Azadiractin or Malathion 0.03% or Phosphamidon 0.02% or Neem oil 0.5 (Sathe et al., 2014). In Bihar, for effective control of C. bullita, spraying of dimethoate @ 1 ml/l of water at fortnightly intervals from last week October to mid-January has been reported (Anonymous,

On the bt123 a low concentration was used, however, the numbers were not far from the bt 456 at a low infestation. Superharvest was used at a high concentration and the numbers were substantially low. The corn varieties were not equally yolked at controlling the ecb. Based of my data, the corn seed make the…

A two-part study was recently done to show what natural habitat a Pill bug, Armadillidium vulgare, naturally prefers: wet or dry environments along with a light or dark environment. It was hypothesized that a Pill bug would prefer and wet and dark environment based on its natural habitat of soil. For the wet and dry experiment, a coffee filter and soil were placed in each chamber of a double petri dish with one being dampened before being placed in. For the light and dry experiment a light was hung above one chamber of another double-chambered petri dish while the other chamber was covered with aluminum foil, after placing soil in both chambers. An equal number of Pill bugs was placed in each chamber and a study was taken for ten minutes where every thirty seconds the number of Pill bugs in each dish was counted. The results showed that Pill bugs, unlike it’s natural habitats, preferred light and dry environments.…

This lab’s purpose is to help differentiate between kinesis and taxis movements of pill bugs (Armadillidiidae). The experiment is designed to be interpreted in the real world to accurately help locate populations of pill bugs. A choice chamber was filled with four different mediums in four different locations to test the pill bugs’ preference of mediums. The middle or fifth chamber of the choice chamber was not filled with any medium so it could serve as the control group of the experiment. The mediums consisted of pine shavings, moss, mulch, and mealworm nutrient. The movement of the pill bugs was observed and reported every minute for fifteen minutes. After fifteen minutes, the final observation of the location of each of the pill bugs was recorded and used later in the experiment. This method of study was chosen because it provided an easy yet effective way to observe and record the movement of the pill bugs. The choice chamber would offer an easy way for the pill bugs to be located and then quickly have their population observed and written down as data.…

Thus, the need for alternatives to mainstream pest control is quite pressing. In reality, people have been using different materials as pest control against Callosobruchus maculatus for centuries. Ancient Egyptians in 1000 B.C., for instance, used ash dust as pest control for their stores of grain (M. Hafez, Nadia Z. Dimetry, and M. H. Abbass). More recently, essential oils have been considered effective pest control methods since they are comprised of volatile compounds and are not harmful to most mammals (G.K Ketoh et al.). While the effectiveness of essential oils has been tested, the effectiveness of sunflower oil specifically is uncertain and thus needs to be tested. The goals of this experiment are to determine whether sunflower seed oil will be effective in preventing the C. maculatus from laying eggs on the Vigna unguiculata. Based on the success of other essential oils, if the Vigna unguiculata are covered with concentrations of sunflower oil, then the C. maculatus will not be able to lay as many eggs on the beans as they would in the absence of sunflower oil. For the purpose of testing this hypothesis, the independent variable is the presence of sunflower oil, whereas the dependent variable is the number of eggs found on the beans after a period of…

This led to the conclusion that the Leaf Mining fly would be an effective bio control agent. This study contradicts the patterns shown in South Africa as there has been little effect on the Jacaranda tree by the Leaf Mining Fly. Bella, Mazzeo and Suss(1978) also examined the behaviour and life cycle of the Leaf Mining Fly on the Jacaranda tree. They studied the relationship between the two species and found that the Leaf Mining Fly is dependent on the Jacaranda tree for recourses such as food and safety and that the relationship was parasitic in that only the Leaf Mining Fly benefits from the relationship and the Jacaranda tree is harmed. They also noted that the Leaf Mining Fly is not solely dependent on the Jacaranda tree and that the parasite had the ability to survive on other species of trees. This suggests that a possible reason for the increase in population of the Leaf Mining Fly with no decrease in the population of Jacaranda trees in South Africa is due to a movement of the parasitic fly to another species of tree. This study will focus on determining whether this is a possibility and if the Leaf Mining Fly is effecting any specific species that are indigenous to South Africa. If so, it will be necessary to control…
