Oceanography: Overview
Grade/Subject: 5th- Science
Unit: Oceanography
Unit Length: 4 weeks
The purpose of this portfolio is to provide the students’ understanding and knowledge of the characteristics of the ocean environment, including its five layers, physical characteristics of an ocean organism of their choice, and the food chain of their organism in order for it to survive. The portfolio will show the students’ understanding of oceanography either by drawings and illustrations or through essays and papers of their choice. The students’ understanding and knowledge will then be included in a final report.
At the end of weeks 1-3 for this unit, you will decide which work you would like to pick to be added to your portfolio that demonstrates the understanding of the content listed below. During week 4, all students will write a final paper along with a cover page. The final report puts all of the information from weeks 1-3 together. The weekly assignments are intended to demonstrate the newly acquired knowledge that was learned in the given week. 1) Construct a drawing and label the ocean environment including its five layers OR construct a 3-dimentional model labeling the ocean environment including its five layers (if this is used for the portfolio, pictures will be taken and printed) 2) Write a one page essay describing the ocean environment OR write a one page essay explaining the different things that live in the ocean’s environment
