Observation In Music Class
This past spring break, I spent a lot of time at Uniontown Area High School. I played piano for their spring musical, so I was there everyday after school in preparation for the upcoming performances. One day I was catching up with my former band director when we eventually got on the topic of classes and assignments, which led to her mentioning that she had been leading the special education class in musical activities a few days out of the week and she invited me to come observe. The very next day I was sitting in the band room once again, but this time with 2 special education teachers and a dozen teenagers with different disabilities. The person that I selected to observe closely for this assignment, who we’ll call Paul, was a 17-year-old boy with Down syndrome. Paul’s appearance seemed pretty typical of those with the disability. He had a very short, thick neck, which was in contrast to the rest of his slender body with short arms and legs. His facial features were kind of flat with narrow eye slits, but he had an undeniably charming smile. One thing that stood out to me that we discussed in class was that he had a single transverse palmer crease. Throughout my time in high school I was always aware of the special education class and the students in it, but I never saw them outside of lunch or walking in the halls. I was surprised how with how well the students did with the music activities, and with how much they seemed to genuinely enjoy the experience. This has definitely made me feel much more comfortable with the idea of working with students like Paul in the future. I plan on using the activities I observed in the future, and am glad I got to see the topic of my group project in

    In this transcript, a mother named Kristy tells us about how she dealt with her son Tin’s having Mosaic Down Syndrome. At first she told Tim’s Kindergarten teacher, but she started to treat Tim differently. She would allow Tim to do whatever he wanted to do, just to appease him. However, Kristy didn’t want that. She wanted Tim to have a regular education, just like everybody else. So, from then on, Kristy decided not to tell Tim’s teachers about Tim’s condition. She didn’t even tell Tim. “[I]f he knows that he has Mosaic Down Syndrome, he’s gonna use that for a crutch. Big time. So, we decided, you know, we’re just not going to tell him until he gets a little bit older…” This secrecy didn’t protect Tim from pain though. “By junior high, Tim was starting to have a hard time fitting in with other kids.” Other children would insult him, pick on him, and tease him. Later on, when Tim was around 13, Kristy told him about his disease. Amazingly, Tim wasn’t upset. He actually told his classmates, and they “started cutting him some slack. He wasn’t the ‘weird kid’ anymore; he was the kid with ‘that Mosaic Down thing.’” Once Tim’s classmates finally knew why Tim was so odd, they treated him better. When people didn’t really know Tim as a person and only knew that Tim had a medical condition, they were fine with letting him do whatever he wanted. When people knew Tim but didn’t know about his condition, they bullied him. But, when those people found out that Tim had Mosaic Down Syndrome, they began treating him better. Since people treat others differently because of their IQ, Kristy was forced to hide Tim’s disability from him.     Excited, I was truly excited because I’ve always wanted to visit a Deaf school and today was the day I would be visiting the Pennsylvania school for the Deaf (PSD). A school located in the suburban neighborhood of 100 West School House Lane and there we were welcomed! Our tour guide was all smiles as we entered the visitor center full of amazing architecture and beautiful showcases of student work hanging on walls. A group of three we were and were all students at some university in Pennsylvania. She let us know that one of the people that built the building was deaf himself and left in mind that this was going to be a school for deaf students and made it to their benefit including floor color changes when near a classroom door. The rooms where large and full of resources for the students to use. There at PSD were students ranging from early childhood education to twelfth grade. Over 200 students attended this institution. Not every student there was deaf. Some there just attended the early childhood program where they shared a classroom with other kids who were deaf and played together. Our tour guide signed and spoke English simultaneously for us who are just beginning to learn sign. Our tour guide wasn’t deaf but her daughter had meningitis at the age of two which caused her to become deaf. Immediately she started to take classes and learned sign language. Her daughter attended PSD at a young age; from then on she began working there herself. All the staff must be able to sign even if it is introductory sign language.     I’m currently doing my practicum at the Virginia Institute of Autism and I have been working one on one with Mike and let me just say he is the sweetest kid ever! Mike is seven years old and hates homework. In his classroom there are about six teachers and 5 students.     I think that these stories are unfortunately in the minority, but it does the heart good to hear them. It surprises me that this doesn’t happen more. I understand that “regular” education classroom teachers are not equipped and had not planned on having anything to do with special education, but that I why I loved reading about the collaboration between the special education teacher and the classroom teacher. The thing I found new and surprising what that deaf-blindness is its own category under IDEA. It was shocking because it really is a low incidence population, but the need for educators for those specific needs are high. This chapter gave me a lot of information about the various assessments or more about the varieties of assistive technology that is out there. I really enjoyed the video link about Rhonda and her “neat eater”. This just shows how having a good attitude and wanting independence can really transform an individual with disabilities life.     Over the past years, I have gained a good amount of experience working with children. These children have come form all types of backgrounds.     One of the actions I perform out of compassion and kindness is stacking chairs and music stands after rehearsing with my orchestra. It’s a lot of work because there are a lot of people, and our director is often left to it by himself.
