Health maintenance is how an individual prevents illness and maintains maximum function. In the African American community health promotion is being geared toward the youth and the elderly, programs such as Get Moving, the Silver Sneaker club are just a few programs that encourage a healthier diet and place a strong emphasis on exercise. The African American diet is very high in fats and starches; it includes a lot of fried foods and meals that are layered in cheeses and sugars. This is a perfect combination for high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and diabetes. The call for action to make changes is a nationwide project to teach individuals how to live healthier, to expand the life span of an individual and also assist a community and individual with a better quality of…

For families like the Lacks’ who live in impoverished communities, lack of income leads to food deserts, a setting with the continual purchase of high, energy-dense fast foods in light of the inaccessibility to proper nutrition, and while often disregarding symptoms of diabetes and heart disease that result from this high-caloric diet, they are “less likely to visit a doctor and get routine screenings” and “less likely to be referred to specialists.” Consequently, African Americans are twenty times more likely than whites to be diagnosed with heart failure (New England Journal of Medicine), and 69% of black men and 82% of black women are considered obese in America (State of Obesity), nearly 1.5 times that of white men and women. Along with the lack of proper nutrition comes twice as much fast-food advertising in black children compared to white children and…
African Americans have a higher rate of illness than the dominant race in America. This racial group has a higher rate of “heart disease, stroke, cancer, HIV/AIDS, asthma and diabetes, as well as a higher rate of infant mortality” (Gordy, 2011). This can be attributed to poor eating habits and not enough exercise which is exacerbated by the fact that a large percentage of African Americans in the United States live in low income neighborhoods. Low income neighborhoods generally have a shortage of grocery stores and are over populated with liquor stores.…
Obesity is not racist or biased; it will affect all individuals when given the opportunity. However obesity does seem to give preferential treatment to those of low SES. The predominate reasons for the increased prevalence in areas of low SES is lack of education, availability of healthy food choices, and cost and preparation time for healthy meals. There are many programs and policies that have been implemented to decrease to rate of obesity including legislative, state, and local policy and programs. The treatment for obesity is first and foremost prevention; if prevention has failed the next action is diet and activity modification as well as medical intervention. The problem of obesity confronts many actual and potential ethical dilemmas. As care providers we must ensure that we are caring for patients ethically and respectfully. The cost of obesity is wide stretch from the monetary cost of providing specialized care to the emotional impacts that obesity has on the individual. Obesity is a global problem but communities of low SES are the hardest hit. We must unite to battle this epidemic with an emphasis on aiding the low SES communities.…
Yet this obsession with obese Americans is about more than body fat. Certainly there is a debate to be had about the extent to which obesity is a problem in America - a discussion best left to medical experts. But a close examination of the popular genre on obesity reveals it is about more than consumption in the most literal sense of eating food. Obesity has become a metaphor for 'over-consumption' more generally. Affluence is blamed not just for bloated bodies, but for a society which is seen as more generally too big for its own good.…

In order for change to take place there needs to the needs to be an appropriate education operation to accompany this issue. Why is my community plagued with these preventable diseases? There is a lack of consciousness and education of health.…

Over 10 billion donuts are consumed in the US every year and ⅔ of us are overweight. But why Americans? Why not China or South America? Here’s why.…
