The Great Man theory suggests that great leaders possess certain traits that are inherited through birth. Earlier leadership was considered as a quality found in males and therefore the theory got its name. It is assumed that in times of need, a great man will arise. This theory portrays leaders as heroic and mythic characters destined to rise to leadership when necessary.…

Q1. Are you a leader, born or cultivated or both? How do you characterize your leadership traits based on the leadership profiles presented by Narayana Murthy and Rahul Khosla? Ans. For centuries there has been a debate about whether leaders must be born into their leadership capacities or whether leadership can be developed in all of us. Our beliefs about how people become leaders affect how we evaluate people’s leadership potential. Believing people are born leaders is likely to result in a focus more on selection (identify the right people) rather than on development (develop the people you get). On the other hand, believing that people are made into leaders by their experiences would be more likely to result in a greater focus on making sure people had the right opportunities to develop into leaders. I believe I am a leader in the making. The way we think about leadership affects how we perceive the leaders around us. For instance, if we expect a leader to be a hero, we are likely to see someone who takes charge to save the day as a good leader and someone who asks everyone’s opinions and lets the group make decisions as weak. Alternatively, if we think a leader should be collaborative and focused on making sure decisions arise from the group, we would view someone who is directive as aggressive or a tyrant. One cannot say with conviction whether a leader is born or cultivated. I was born with some traits of a leader, which generally others have cultivated. Similarly, I have cultivated some of the traits which others feel they were born with. My life experiences have made me what I am today.
