O-Lan In The Good Earth
O-lan and Her Self Appreciation A person’s value should not be determined by what others around them think, but rather how they act and speak. Many good people, though, disregard this and rely on others to tell them their worth and value, all the while catering to these people’s needs. Underappreciated and disregarded, they allow others to label them; never standing up for themselves. In Pearl Buck’s The Good Earth, a perfect example of this type of person would be the character O-lan. She always undervalued herself and placed higher worth on others’ lives, but still strived for what benefited her loved ones the most. O-lan is a simple woman who tries to do what’s best for others. “. . . although O-lan had always cut his robes, making them …show more content…
“Then O-lan worked in the house and made new clothes for each one and new shoes, and she made coverings for flowered cloth stuffed with warm cotton for every bed . . .” This quote from the book was taken after Wang Lung had come into great wealth and bought even more land from the Great House. O-lan was then able to focus on doing house work. She did as instructed to and went further than told with her work. Arguing and passing around chores was never an option in her mind; she just did it all! Her submissiveness was prime in allowing other people to boss her around. By never standing up for herself, she tripped into a hole that was hard to dig out …show more content…
“She clutched them greedily as a child might and held them in her hand without speech. When next he looked at her . . . she was nibbling one cautiously, but when she saw him looking at her she covered it again with her hand and kept her jaws motionless.” When O-lan is first granted something, she is hesitant and cautious, as if afraid it would be taken away. As well as afraid, she is shocked to be shown kindness – one action that was never directed towards her. “The pearls? I have them . . . I thought one day I might have them set in earrings.” This contrasts greatly with the scene of the pearls. It shows O-lan with more confidence and a greater appreciation of herself. Earlier, she asked to keep these pearls and is now planning for their use. O-lan has changed from being timid and unappreciative of herself to coming out of her shell, no matter how slight. These jewels awakened her pride and confidence, which she finally mirrored back into the world. After a long and exhausting search, she has finally found her

Every person has on object in their life that is very precious to the, for me, it is my pearl necklace. They are small and round and a lustrous cream color with a pink sheen. They have a tiny gold clasp that holds the necklace together. My pearls tell a story than no other personal artifact can: my heritage. The pearls symbolized tradition and womanhood in my family’s life, and they were to be worn with dignity and pride. Every holiday, the girls of the family accessorized their outfits with the pearls given by our grandmother. They were something we all had in common: the thread that linked our generations together. I recall looking down at my Nana’s casket and I could almost hear her voice whispering in my ear, “Never let any one prevent you from being you,” her outlook on life. Taking my last glimpse of Nana, I gently rubbed her casket goodbye and then rubbed my pearls. Instead of clinging to my mother that day, I clenched to my pearls.…

Based on a character’s actions alone, many could be seen as evil or immoral. However, characters are not as black and white as they seem. Infact, many complex characters fall in between the lines of inherently untainted or inherently reprobate. In Charles Dicken’s novel, A Tale of Two Cities, Madame Defarge is a character who could, based solely on her actions, be considered evil or immoral. Yet, the full scope of her character leaves the reader feeling more sympathetic.…

Through her actions and dialogue, it was able to display how she was keeping the family grounded. Her rash yet beneficial decisions allowed her to be the rock of the family and keep them together. When the family was in need of money and they were in the south they as well as many other families raided the homes of the rich. Wang Lung was able to get enough gold for them to move back to the land. Then, Wang Lung felt a lump inbetween O-lan’s breasts. It turned out to rag that was tied and when he opened it and saw of pile of jewels. O-lan explained how she saw “... a brick loosened in the wall and I slipped there carelessly so no other soul could see and demand a share.” (Buck 145) Nothing was mentioned of O-lan even debating on going to the rich man’s house. Her discrete actions show how she’s always putting family first. Plus her not telling Wang right away shows how she doesn't feel the need to brag nor spend it again showing how she keeps the family in…

What is required of one to be considered a virtuous person? Avoiding evil is not sufficient to be virtuous; one must also actively choose to do good. Ransom, in C.S. Lewis’s book Out of the Silent Planet, performed three virtuous acts, one in promising an old woman to find her boy, two in tearing himself from the hrossa in order to prevent two unsavory characters from disturbing them any longer, and three in sharing his unparallelled experiences. When Ransom promised an old, worried woman that he would search for her missing boy, he decided to actively help her for goodness’ sake alone. After Weston and Devine shot Hyoi, Ransom fled from amongst the hrossa so that the other two men would leave the placid hrossa alone, and so avoided bringing more evil upon the them. Finally, by publishing his journey and experiences in Malacandra, Ransom leaped to the beneficial action of improving the minds of those in his home planet.…

For the duration of the story, O-lan proves to be not only strong but also incredibly useful. At first glance, O-lan does not resemble the prettiest of girls exteriorly, however that does not distract from her strength and usefulness or suitability to accomplish tasks that are just as important as tasks that the earth may complete. The earth again, may not always appear to be a beautiful feature but the earth almost always provides as well as proving to be strong. Such comparability between O-lan and the earth is exemplified by Lilith Saintcrow in Strange Angels, “Better to be strong than pretty and useless.”…

In the society, there are some people who are committed to fighting for equality and justice. Such individuals put their wellbeing on the line for the sake of others. For instance, civil rights activists risk their lives whenever they go to the streets to demonstrate against an unjust government policy or unethical company operations. In most cases, people fighting for the wellbeing of others are often ignored. As a matter of fact, there are those that think such individuals are mere attention seekers. The above-mentioned sentiments are exhibited in "A&P" by John Updike where Sammy opposes the manner in which the store manager treated the three girls that entered his store wearing just bath suits. He ends up quitting his stable job, but the girls he was defending do not notice or appreciate his actions. The same happens to Nea in "Saving Sourdi" by May-Lee Chai who ends up being rejected by her sister despite trying to protect her on multiple…

First, personification is useful in that it shows Wang Lung’s dependency on the land to find food. Wang Lung has many good harvests and he sells them at the market until the drought. Not only do people steal during the drought, but his aunt and uncle eat their children to survive. To make matters worse, Wang Lung’s family is suffering from starvation without the land producing any food. As time goes on, Wang Lung’s uncle comes to his house attempting to make Wang Lung sell his land. The money he would receive if he sold the land would make him able to get food to feed his family, but it wouldn’t be worth it because it wouldn’t last them much longer. Therefore, O-lan says, “The land we will not sell surely” (Buck 92). Instead, they go south where there is food and when they come back to the farm Wang Lung’s harvests are even richer than before.…

One theme used to show Chinese culture is survival. For example, when Wang Lung’s family is struggling to find food, his sons steal meat, and they defend themselves by saying, “I took it – it is mine, this meat (Buck 112).” When it is hard to survive it can make a person do something that they wouldn’t normally do. Survival not only changes a person, but it also changes their outlook on life. While O-Lan was giving birth to another child Wang Lung is thinking, “Male or female it mattered nothing to him now – there was only another mouth coming which must be fed (Buck 81).” Trying to survive took Wang Lung’s excitement and turned it into worry. Pearl Buck is trying to show that if people are trying to survive that they will do anything possible.…

Huong uses careful diction to portray the perspective of Hang as she travels through her journey and comes to her own realizations. Huong writes, “I understood something, perhaps for the first time: In every life, there must come a moment when what is most sacred, most noble, in us evaporates into thin air. In a flash of lucidity, the values we have honored and cherished reveal themselves in all their poverty and vulgarity, as they had to this girl. From this moment, no one is spared. (Huong 85)” In this quote Hang comes to a crucial moment in her life where she realizes the other side of her culture, the…

The birth of a female baby is seen to be a misfortune to a family as it is an evil omen. The birth of a girl is believed to bring bad luck in a family, and thus is fated to face discrimination in the ancient Chinese society. When O-lan gives birth to the first girl, she hollowly says, "It is only a slave this time-not worth mentioning"(Buck 51). Daughters are valued less than sons. When the first girl is born, Wang Lung suspects the girl is the source of all evil in his home, "Wang Lung…

And she smiled with proud and simple joy. Madame Forestier, quite overcome, clasped her by the hand. “Oh, my poor Mathilde. But mine was only paste. Why, at most it was worth only five hundred francs!” “Only five hundred francs!” Madame Loisel gasped. Lost in thought, she began to feel sick. Thinking that she has just wasted ten years; doing heavy housework, hateful duties of cooking, bargaining with the butcher and many others, along with living the life of a pauper. “Oh darling, are you all right?” Madame Forestier questioned. “You look terribly ill” “I….I’ve got to do!” Madame Loisel mumbled as she ran towards the court yard. By the time she got home, she was out of breath. Madame Loisel yelled for her husband, but he didn’t respond, guessing that he still hasn’t gotten home yet. Thinking whiled she waited for her husband to return from work, about how he is going to react. When Monsieur Loisel came home, Madame Loisel greeted him pleasantly and began to tell him what has just happened. As she explained the situation, she could see her husband slowly become furious. Madame Loisel finished what she needed to say. Monsieur Loisel calmly stood up and told Madame Loisel to get back the necklace. Madame Loisel was confused with her husband’s reaction but went to go see Madame Forestier. Madame Loisel got to Madame Forestier house and asked “May I please have the necklace back. I will buy you the exact one that I’ve misplaced.” “Of course not, you’ve given it to me so now it’s mine!” Madame Forestier fought back. They continued to fight until Madame Forestier became violent. She revealed a dagger that was hidden under a cloth and persisted on stabbing Madame Loisel. Madame Loisel was stocked and blankly stared at the dagger coming towards her. As she stared, every second became slower and quieter. When the dragger touches her flesh, she awakes and notices it was all a dream……
