1. “You can change an organizational culture”, as a nurse manager, you may have the power to change your organization’s policies with the stroke of a pen. And you may have the ability to hire, fire, promote and demote people with relatively little effort. But changing a rooted culture is the toughest task you will face. To do so, you must win the hearts and minds of the people you work with, and that takes cunning and persuasion. People must have the understanding of why the change in strategy or in culture is needed. The second is limited resources, inevitably, changing the organization will require some shifting resources away from some areas and towards others. The third is motivation- workers have to want to make change. And lastly is the institutional politics. One manager complains that : In our organization, you get shot down, before you stand up. One of the example that I can give is the dress code here in the company, that all staffs should wear descent clothing so as not to provoke the UAE locals specially the women, you have to respect the culture so as to avoid conflict.
To overcome those obstacles, first, recognizing you won’t be able to convert everyone at once, start with the staffs who have disproportionate influence in the organization. Get them committed to change or failing that, get them out. And once they are committed to change, shine a spotlight on their accomplishments so others get the message. If a nurse manager wants to stimulate creativity in the workplace, evaluate company’s personnel structure, By identifying employees’ strengths and consider creating new groups with tailored mix of talents, this is worker’s creative capabilities. Younger team members may provide energy and optimism; veterans may provide insight from the past experience. Consider creating a plant-packed “green” room or exterior garden where staffs can spend an hour a week with nothing but a blank pad and pencil. Encourage innovation through an open opportunities
