The decision to enroll in college was motivated by my experience that night and my long interest in the health field. I have a full time job, four kids, and a wife with full time job. Going back to school after several years of hiatus does not make it easy. Despite the nature of my job, which involves overtime and irregular hours, I was still able to keep up with my classes. Meanwhile, my goal to realize my dream was cut short when I got accepted to nursing school and dropped out due to family reason. This time around, with full support and cooperation of my family, I am fully ready to pursue and to realize my long time goal.
I feel the rewards of a professional career in nursing would satisfy the goals I have hoped to achieve for long time. I feel I have the drive, enthusiasm, and skills to train and hopefully one day work as a nurse. My work experience to date has equipped me with these skills. I am eager to pursue nursing as a life changing career in order to contribute to the welfare of others. Gigi always had positive feelings about the idea of becoming an adult. As an adult, she can make more money, be independent without relying on someone, and have the freedom do things she was once prohibited to do before. When asked about how college helped her grow as an adult, she replied, “…having clinical experiences in hospitals and nursing homes made me realize that I can be a productive member of society.” She described being a nurse as being involved with the community, which was an aspect she wasn’t able to fulfill while in school. By obtaining many scholarships, and graduating with honors and a 3.85 GPA, Gigi was…

Shea states, “It is not just a “given” but a “given” that can be developed.” (Shea, pg. 116) This says to me that everyone starts with the same capacity or allotment of ability to develop their spirituality. It is up to the individual where or even if they decide to pursue developing their spirituality. Some people choose to keep their spirituality dormant so to speak, as others choose to develop and grow on a spiritual journey. For someone who chooses to nurture and open themselves up to a spiritual relationship it becomes part of who they are, part of their identity. Shea tells us a story that displays this very claim, a story of an unlikely pair that end up sharing a spiritual experience. The story is about a housekeeper that is working in a hospital that is moved to touch and speak softly to a patient who is very sick. The words and gentle touch of the housekeeper takes the patient on a relaxing, peaceful journey. The patient describes this journey as, “A source of comfort that was wider and deeper than pain and fear.” (Shea pg. 117) Shea describes this journey as the patient’s “soul space”, the guide had enabled her to realize her spiritual identity. (Shea pg. 118)…

“Quack! Quack!” she exclaimed. “Yes it is bath time!” I replied as I gave my patient her nightly bath at my very first job as a nursing assistant for disabled adults. I remember initially being so excited to learn new procedures, medications and diseases. However, what I ultimately valued most during this experience was forming trusting, ongoing relationships with my patients (and learning that “Quack” meant bath!). The inimitable bond formed caring for these individuals motivated me to seek out a career in which I can provide meaningful and personalized care over time. Advanced practice nursing as a family nurse practitioner will allow me the opportunity to provide primary care services to individuals with chronic conditions beginning in childhood…

Nursing is a very challenging and interesting career which involves hard work and commitment. Since I started studying Health and Social Care, my interest in Nursing has grown. This has inspired me to study Child Nursing as I believe that my studies can be practically applied. I am also keen to make a difference to people’s lives, whether caring for children or supporting parents. My interest in and appreciation for this career has been encouraged by family members who work in the NHS, and who have made me aware of its less glamorous side, as well as the positivity of caring for others.…

I am a graduate from Glen Oaks Community College and I would love to continue my education with Glen Oaks and their Nursing Program. I am a very athletic person, therefore in my free time my activities include running, playing sports, coaching and being involved with my family. Working two jobs, one being a Nursing Assistant and Unit Technician at The Community Health Center of Branch County and the other doing in home care for an elderly patient, does make it difficult to find free time. With what little free time I do have I enjoy spending it with my family as they are very important to me. I try to make it a routine to visit with my grandmas to have lunch with them and to drive them around where ever is needed due to the fact that they both cannot drive. I am currently training to run a marathon in May. During softball season, I volunteer with the coaching staff at the Coldwater High School. My greatest satisfaction so far in life, is the fact that I am one of few to have graduated from a college with a degree within my family. I am proud to say that I have paid for me education with my hard work. I hope with the help of Glen Oaks Community College I can obtain a new satisfaction of becoming a nurse. It would be my dream come true.…

“To me the distinguishing characteristic of professional nursing is clinical thinking, every patient, whether well, getting sick, being sick or getting well has the right to a nurse who by virtue of this clinical thinking, manages the nursing care and is accountable for that care.” It would be a blessing to be a student of a prestigious program that was founded by the honorable late Ms. Dorothy M. Smith. Her aspiration and dedication to the program to feed and educate hungry minds is phenomenal. Being a former biology major, I was never enthusiastic as I am being a nursing major. Nurses are the glue that holds hospitals, clinics and nursing homes together. Desiring a Bachelor of Sciences in nursing, I plan to hold a position as a RN. Furthermore, I will continue my education to gain a doctorate in nursing. Attending University of Florida’s nursing program to achieve my career goals is a dream of an aspiring nurse. With the University of Florida’s academic standing, student involvement, comfortable environment and cheerful staff, being a part of the program is a beneficial plus. Entering college, my goal was to graduate with a Bachelor in biology and then attend medical school, to pursue a career as a pediatrician. However, a few complications arouse and that goal was short-lived. I am always told; never give up, on yourself and your dreams. Itching for the need to stay in the medical field, I decided on nursing. Deciding to get both my bachelors and masters rather than only my bachelor was the best decision I made. I decided on becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practioner. My career goal will not be achieved easily. It is a guaranteed package of gray hair, sweat, stress, gallons of Starbucks and dreams of my bed. I can be certain that I will be pushed to my limit to become the best nurse I am capable of being so that I am able to care for my patients the best way that I can. Previously having attended University of Florida, there was not a day I regretted saying yes to…

For me, choosing to be a part of the nursing profession was not as easy as it may have been for others. I am not the daughter or granddaughter of a nurse. My mother was a single unemployed woman for most of my life. I knew I wanted to walk my own path, but I wasn’t certain what that was. When I entered the workforce, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed familiar steps. For many years I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but responsibilities held me back. I realized while I may be very good at what I was doing, I was not following my heart.…

I’ve been taking care of people my whole life. I was my sister’s “mini nurse” both times she was operated on for trigeminal neuralgia. I was only six when this happened. Later in my life I became my mother’s care taker when she couldn’t walk for several months. At this point I was in high school and knew I was destined to help people get well again. So I started preparing myself for a career in nursing. Now I’m a sophomore in IUP’s nursing program and I can’t wait to start clinicals this year.…

Being a nurse today can be very rewarding and very challenging. Many people choose to be nurses because the love to help people and it comes natural to them; it seems to be what many do best. Nursing is a diverse and rewarding discipline that combines compassion with sophisticated health technology. “Nurses evaluate, diagnose, and treat health problems. They help people meet basic health needs, adapt to physical changes, recover from illness, and die with dignity. You knew all that. The profession offers a variety of employment and career opportunities. Nurses are employed in clinics, hospitals, schools, corporations, the military, and in private practice. Of course, you probably knew that, too. You may not know that job prospects in nursing are, in a word, awesome." ( Princeton Review Online)…
