In the 1960s, technology entered the nursing profession and the very first computer systems were integrated into hospitals. The early computer systems were implemented in order to process orders promptly and keep an accurate record of charges incurred by patients during their hospital stay (Murphy, 2010). Over the next few years, technology improved and started to revolutionize the nursing profession, documentation and communication throughout the hospital went from pen and paper to online databases filled with electronic patient information (Murphy, 2010). The introduction of NI has “prompted significant transformation in healthcare, along with increased attention to patient safety and outcome” (HIMSS Nursing Informatics Awareness Task Force, 2007, p. 38). Nursing informatics (NI) was finally recognized as a specialty in the mid-1990s (Murphy, 2010)…

Electronic Health Records is the technology that I find most beneficial at work. It helps nurses, doctors and other healthcare providers to access patient information literally for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. EHR allows for a better coordinated care for all patients. The information can be transmitted immediately to other providers. EHR allows nurses and doctors to navigate through patients’ data that is far better than pulling charts on the cabinets and searching through pages of the chart to obtain one or two information. The beauty of EHR is that multiple healthcare providers can access the same records at the same time. There are some short comings about electronic health records such as when the system is off line, documentation…

Growing up in a competitive world made me the diligent being that I am today. However, at those times I had to do a research on some school topics assigned by my elementary teacher, I’d still have to dig books on our school library and had it photocopied at the local circulation center. All the while, my classmates, the luckier ones, had been sitting at the comforts of their homes surfing the internet and printing data out in one sitting. I wasn’t bothered then. I was still at the top of my class.…

Kortteisto, Komulainen, Mäkelä, Kunnamo, and Kaila (2012) stated that since the dawn of information technology in healthcare, the ultimate goals have been to help clinicians in their decision making process to prevent errors, to maximize efficiency, to enable evidence-based care, and ultimately to improve health and healthcare. Nurses who had higher Nursing Informatics competency were more satisfied with network education. Those who had their own computers and attended more than 4 hours per week network education course were more satisfied with the network education. They suggested that the health care institutions should…
