Arthritis is one of the leading causes of femoral fractures especially in the elderly. In the first day post-op the surgeon is the one who opens the dressing not the nurse. Generally, the dressing is not opened before 24 hours have passed since the surgery, aiming to prevent infection which is why s/he is likely to be given a shot of antibiotics. As soon as the physio therapist comes, s/he will assess the patient’s pain, ability to walk or do exercises in bed. By checking if s/he is fit for physio, leads to choosing the appropriate walking aid and teaching the individual how to use it, to promote walking and ambulation. Physios will teach the patient specific exercises to strengthen the leg and restore hip movement to allow walking and other normal activities soon after surgery. Such exercises will gradually help to regain strength in the leg and regain the use of the joint and muscles. As therapy progresses together, the physio and the client will increase the weight s/he puts on his/her leg until s/he is able to walk without assistance.
