For my final exam question my choice was:
Discuss research utilization in nursing practice versus evidenced based practice of nursing. Are the definitions interchangeable?
The reference chapter used was chapter 17 in the text book titled Using Research Findings in Practice Settings.
I would like to start off by defining Research Utilization and Evidence Based Practice.
Research utilization refers to using research knowledge to change an existing clinical practice or profession situation, a process of using findings from conducting research to guide practice. Nurses use research to guide nursing practice and their efforts to improve patient outcomes. The process involves critical analysis and evaluation of research findings and then determining how they fit into clinical practice. The process begins with a problem or knowledge based trigger which includes scientific validation, comparative analysis, consideration of cost and benefits issues, the development of an action plan and evaluation. It also involves collecting, observable, measurable, and data to describe, explain, or predict outcomes methods and processes.
Evidence based nursing practice is the integration of research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values to facilitate clinical decision-making.
It is the use of the current best evidence in making decisions about patient care that may include research findings, evidence based theories, opinions of clinical expertise, patients assessments and information about a patients values and preferences.
As far as Research Utilization and Evidence Based Practice both being interchangeable I have discovered that while Research Utilization overlaps interchangeably with Evidence Base Practice, it appears that , Evidence Base Practice goes beyond the scientific research steps.
