Nummular eczema is known by other names – nummular dermatitis and discoid eczema. No matter how strange sounding the term is, it is a common kind of eczema which can happen at any age. It does not look like the regular atopic dermatitis plus it can be more difficult to treat. The cause of this type of eczema is unknown although these are attributed as probable triggers –
• Reaction to inflammation
• Insect bite
• Dry skin during winter
Nummular dermatitis looks like ringworm (tinea corporis) at times. You can only ascertain that it is not ringworm once it does not react to anti-fungal medication. Nummular dermatitis can be infected by bacteria, often by staphylococcus, so the bacterial infection must also be treated.

This includes a 20-minute immersion on plain water every night. This should be followed by a steroid cream application to a still wet skin. Soap can only be used on the groin and axilla. A single study has proven that as high as 90% of the subjects have responded to this kind of regimen.
