There are a number of ways teachers have been incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures to their specific learning areas. Some have been slightly easier than others, but nonetheless there are opportunities for teachers to do so in every aspect of the key learning areas. This will all depend on the teacher’s knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. The more confident a teacher is on the topic, the more opportunities that teacher will see to incorporate Indigenous histories and culture.
As a pre-service teacher in the field of Science, it is difficult to think of ways in which students can gain another perspective or add to their existing understanding of the Indigenous history and/or culture. For this reason, the essay will focus on specifically on incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture

Cross curriculum priorities require more background knowledge of other learning areas and often need a different range of pedagogical approaches that a specific teacher has not previously used. For this reason, ensuring the creation of learning opportunities with students can allow them to gain that deeper understanding that the Australian Curriculum outlines. In this essay, three specific lesson examples will be given, each of which will have been drafted with the Tfel framework in mind (DECDS, 2014).

As teachers, it is imperative, especially when attempting to incorporate a cross curriculum priority like Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, that any pedagogy chosen for a particular lesson, fosters deep understanding by the students and also connects their learning to the students’ lives and aspirations. Both of which fall under the different domains of the Tfel

    Before the nineteenth century, the Aboriginal people had their own way of teaching the children in their community, through organic education. In addition to providing knowledge and skills, organic education kept their culture alive (Ravelli & Webber, 2013: pg. 237). This is because the Aboriginal children would also be taught about their culture and its customs.
