This paper is going to describe some components that you may see when working in either a wired or wireless network. We will look into each component and determine if its ran by another component within and how it operates. We will also provide a base cost or average cost for this type of device/component.

A wireless router is a device that is connected to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) that enables you to broadcast or serve wireless networking within a area. If you want to provide or have wireless networking within your home you will need one of these devices. A good average cost for a wireless router, would be around $50 dollars.

The next component is the computer. The computer is your main source for computing, it connects to your Internet connection and is the component

With computers and IT exploding as it has over the past few years, so has the individuals that try to gain access to your machine. A firewall is a device that applies the security to your network. They come in all different sizes for different setups. Firewalls have two connections. One is to the computer/network and the other is connected to your Internet connection. Firewalls have ranged in price from about $50 dollar to over $3000 dollars. A good average for small size networks would be around $300 to $400 dollars.

The next component that we will look at is a wireless access point. The wireless access point basically extends the network out via wireless. If you a wireless router you most likely will not need an access point? Access point as normally used in large area networks covering large areas. The average cost for a Wireless Access Point is around $600 dollars per Access

Firewalls may be hardware devices or software programs. Hardware firewalls protect an entire network. Software firewalls protect a single computer. Research the Internet for an example of each of these types of firewalls and compare their features. Linksys and Cisco make firewall/routers for home use. The Zone labs are an example of a software firewall.…

Cost: Depending on how many wireless repeaters (signal amplifiers) you have installed, the cost of hardware is generally low, although you are strongly recommended to use the services of a wireless network expert in the selection and configuration of a wireless router. Commercial routers are generally more expensive, but are more stable and offer better security controls. A $99 router from Best Buy is not advisable.…

So what's next on the wireless horizon? A new standard, known as Very High Throughput (VHT), will feature data rates of between 4Gbps and 7Gbps, nearly five times the rate of 802.11n, and will operate on the 60GHz frequency band. As such, the new standard will likely have limited range and will be best suited to peer-to-peer applications such as streaming video from one device to another or moving very large chunks of data in a matter of seconds.…

A firewall is a network security hardware and/or software program that is used to control the flow of traffic into and out of a network or computer. When a computer has firewall protection the flow of data is monitored and filtered. Also, firewalls are barriers to unauthorized access; for example, when a person or program requests access to a network it must first get authorization and verification from the firewall and user. Furthermore, firewalls help protect networks from hackers, viruses, and other malicious digital security risks. Finally, a firewall ensures that our computers are not sending dangerous data to outside networks.…

There are two types of firewalls, hardware firewalls and software firewalls. Software firewalls provide another coating of security, software firewalls prohibit malware on your computer from being sent to others. Hardware firewalls treat any kind of traffic from travelling from a local network out to the internet as safe. An example of a threat entering your computer could be, you visit a website that contains a hidden malicious program that’s designed to secretly install itself on your machine and then send information out via the internet, this maybe to steal personal information, this is one method of infection. It is very dangerous to operate the internet without a firewall because then you will not be notified if a malicious program is trying to enter your computer and if you do not have a firewall it will not be able to protect you from malicious programs that will damage your computer. A hardware firewall is a physical device that connects to a computer and is configurable through connection to it or either through using the internet browser or through a command line…

A firewall restricts access to your network by filtering and blocking packets based on the sender's and receiver's Internet Protocol addresses. A proxy firewall acts as an intermediary between a client and a server, and it retrieves information and sends to the client. A proxy firewall uses stateful inspection technology to monitor incoming information and restricts network packets through the firewall. A firewall uses network address translation or NAT to assign IP addresses to each device which is connected to your network and makes it harder for hackers to break the network security.…

There are two types of firewalls, there is the in-bound firewall that protects against all things that come into your computer. Then there is the two-way firewall. With this firewall it protects both inbound and outbound threats. This type is used quite often these days. Many computer only have a one-way firewall, but many of them like Zone alarm are two way firewalls. Firewalls are used to block or accept information into your computer that is not a threat. It will either send it to where it needs to be or it will block it if the potential of the file is threatening to your device. A type of firewall is your basic McAfee, which works with Microsoft Corporation on your basic computer it is a program that is already installed into your device. It is a virus protector that works with your computers already installed firewall to keep out and potential harmful viruses or threats to your computer. You can do basic setting for the firewall or you can put it to your liking to make sure of no type of threats can enter your computer.…

Your firewall, which is your first line of defense, is susceptible to two common types of attacks. First there are attacks against the firewall itself with the purpose of the attacker being to take control of the firewalls functionality and then launching a DoS attack. The second type of attack against firewalls is an attack on the LAN side of the firewall. These attacks circumvent the rules and policies of the firewall to gain access to the devices that are supposed to be protected by the firewall. The largest vulnerability that exists with firewalls is improper configuration settings. This can lead to the development of security holes which allow unauthorized access from both outside and within your network. All of the aforementioned attacks, threat and vulnerabilities can be mitigated and or avoided altogether.…

Most if not all businesses, schools and big companies regularly use computer systems and go on the internet they usually have many computer systems networked together that get used for important information and keep their companies running. This is why they install firewalls on their systems. Without firewalls there is the risk of malicious viruses getting through, infecting the system and sometimes taking it down completely. The firewall acts as a communications filter which stops those malicious communications from reaching the computer system. Firewalls can also be programmed to only visit certain sites this will make sure that there is no chance of a virus. Firewalls definitely improve the performance of computer systems.…
