I sat in the bathroom and clicked the pause button. Stopping myself, I went outside and slowly gathered my thoughts, or what was left of them. I was just the ripe age of nine but for that day, I felt like I had more knowledge than the average person over the age of forty. Every rule and barrier and been deconstructed and thrown in a blender only to be pieced back into a new form almost alien-like. Everything that I was ever taught up until that date was void, mixed-up, and plain wrong. I hated it. But being my morbidly curious self, I went back in the bathroom and pressed play, hoping that maybe I heard something different. Maybe I was just going insane. Nothing changed. The same cacophonous sounds still shattered not only my ears but my thinking.
Somedays, the world of extreme music was all I need. Punishing drones and sickening free jazz truly sounded just like how I felt. There was no remorse in this music, no light at the end of the tunnel. The chaos brought out the feelings I had for the world. My fascination with the avant-garde scene didn’t stop. While single hour-long sine-waves blarred through my room, I began to paint unorthodox pictures, read up on abstract novels and studied the surrealist ways of film and theatre. My goal was to drain that untapped potential in my mind. All that creativity that I couldn’t express in my schoolwork was in full form here. Each year got better the more I experimented with this new lifestyle. Grades went up, new friends were made, until junior year when I finally hit my stride, and was in full force to once again become a part of society that I was ready to show. It would be cliche to say that Faust changed who I was, but I feel without it, my life would’ve taken a very different and darker path.
