Adam, a 57-year-old male admitted last night has been recently been diagnosed with Diabetes
Mellitus (non –insulin dependent) and now has presented with a severe ulcer on his left foot. He has been prescribed metformin 1500mg daily but has not been taking it regularly. His wife, Margaret and his 23 year old daughter are with him in his room. They are very concerned for Alan’s health and have a number of questions for you.

Case Study 2
You are an RN working on a morning shift in the acute mental health inpatient unit. Steve, a 57-yearold male admitted last night after he had attempted suicide by overdose. Medically cleared by the general ward. Recently diagnosed with depression and has been prescribed sertraline (Zoloft) 150mg daily but not adherent with his medication. Night staff report Steve does not have contact with his family; he has spent the night in his room and is now on category C visual observations (every 15 minutes). Critical Thinking Questions
