In the book the elements of setting, ideas, & authors presentation of ideas help express the theme of the story. The title does not convey theme in the poem. The elements setting indicates theme in the story because there are two gangs that hate each other. They live on opposite sides of the town, fight and argue about many different things. In the text it states, “Not like the Socs, who jump greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next. Greasers are almost like hoods; we steal things and drive old souped-up cars and hold up gas stations and have a gang fight once in awhile.” This quote explains how the greasers are the cool ¨tuff¨ kids in town and the Socs are the upper class citizens who are completely opposite of the greasers. Another element that conveys theme in the poem is ideas in the story. In the book the ideas presented are gangs, violence, poverty, and fights. These ideas make the reader better understand the theme and the characters lives. In the text it states, ¨In New York, Dally blew off steam in gang fights, but here, organized gangs are rarities--- there are just small bunches of friends who stick together, and the warfare is between the social classes. A rumble, when it's called, is usually born of a grudge fight, and the opponents just happen to bring their friends along.” This quote means that in the book there are different social classes and gangs that get into many different fights and disagreements. The next element that expresses theme into story is the author's presentation of ideas. The author uses dialogue, actions, & characters thoughts/ feelings to indicate theme. The author's presentation of ideas allows better understanding to the characters and their lives. In the text is states, " ´This house ain't messy. You oughtta see my

“Nothing Gold Can Stay” is a modernist work because it has rejection of sentimentality and artificiality by saying nothing gold or good can stay. In this poem it says at the start everything is gold or perfect then it goes away in the end which has loss of faith. It is rejecting Eden as a hero and who is flawed.…

This is my first time writing an essay about explicating poems, and actually I do not really like poetry, although they are beautiful and interesting because I often have a hard time to understand tem. In this essay, I choose two poems to explicate, which is “Nothing Gold Can Stay” and “The Road Not Taken”. Through the process of completing this assignment, I have a lot of struggles such as the deeper meaning of each line, the grammar, the balance between two poems, and the figurative languages. Furthermore, when I am writing the essay, I have problems of looking for the metaphor and explain them, I am struggling with its meaning and what it is referring to. Meanwhile, the topic sentences and thesis statements are one of the biggest problem…

One theme that is present is that money doesn't buy happiness. In the poem, the rich man had pride of a millionaire, but depression of a homeless man. Life was hollow and gold was just as common as oxygen. On the other hand, the man living in poverty was exuberant since he didn’t take things for granted and put a great deal of endeavor for things he desire. In relation, Soc’s in the novel Outsiders went around flaring off their wealth to have power over the greasers. Even though they had all this money, Socs did not have such a strong bond as the…

Laura Hillenbrand’s monumental Unbroken is a true story of a promising young Olympic runner from Torrance, California. This promise was soon broken because of the upcoming Second World War, a time period of ferocity and sadism. During this war, many were captivated, many died, only a few came out in a single piece known as war heroes. The war wasn’t the end for these heroes, many caught on with the phrase, post-war life. Post-war life had many survivors on another set of problematic and unforgettable experience. Most Americans initially viewed their place in the postwar world with optimism and confidence. But within two years of the end of the war, new challenges and perceived threats had arisen to erode that confidence. The ultimate hero was…

One common theme The Outsiders and the news article share violence among youth. In The Outsiders, the main character, Ponyboy, is involved in a local gang. Throughout the novel, he indicates his reluctance in participation with this gang; but does do out of a need for loyalty and safety. “By then I figured the gang was coming to rescue me” (Hinton 6). Hinton was able to display reluctance through this small tidbit. The article is not able to use this type of characterization, due to its informational nature. However, it can display violence as a group dynamic, as shown in this quote, “In a crowds as dense as that at Brighton control could not be easily contained, and fights and rowdiness continued sporadically” (Lapping). The violence is shown as a large theme of the story, and is displayed with informational writing.…

The theme reveals something about human nature or life in general. In this case, or in my poem, the theme is that sometimes people are appreciated for their talents and not as a person. “The Seafarer” begins with an old sailor telling his tale of traveling the treacherous seas. He reflects on his difficult experiences, and he has an epiphany. He comes to the realization that the glory of the old days has vanished. He then questions his culture's custom of pouring gold over the dead. He knows that everything that his people regard as treasure possesses no value like fools gold. Robert Frost also teaches us that nothing gold can last in this world. Throughout his poem, he uses similes, metaphors, and other literary devices to represent time tarnishing the things we hold precious. The speakers of both poems allude to the Garden of Eden's drainage of beauty by the gruesome design of time. This shows us that all beauty disappears. Furthermore, the poets show us that nothing is permanent. In the Anglo Saxon poem, “The Seafarer” the speaker explained that the magnificent kingdom no longer has a stable government. While Frost describes nature's first gold as green, nature also has an inescapable fate for that flower. When the seasons change the once beautiful flower will die. Both poems teach us to take pride in world's unique beauty.…
