Although, clothes from a cedar tree doesn’t sound very comfortable, they were actually very soft. The inside of a cedar tree could be beaten until it was soft. The women would then use the beaten wood it to make clothes and blankets. Hats made of cedar root were worn when it rained and were also used for sun protection. They were able to live in permanent houses. These houses were called Plankhouses. A Plankhouse was long and wide and made from cedar wood. The Indians used beaver teeth and stone axes to split the wood. They used wooden pegs like we would use nails to keep their house together. There were no windows in the house, so they would use candles made from dried fish and a cedar wick for lighting. There were only two openings in a Plankhouse. One was used to enter and exit the house and the other was on the roof to let the smoke from the fire pit out and to let fresh air inside. Multiple families lived in the house together, but they were usually related to one another. Each individual family had their own area inside that was divided by woven mats for privacy. When the owner of a Plankhouse died, the family would either move out or they would burn the house down so the spirit of the dead would leave the home and not worry about the

These people produced crops in addition to the abundant natural supplies of their territories. Farming was primarily the responsibility of the women. They planted corn, beans, squash and artichokes in fields that were cleared by groups of men and women. They also grew tobacco in which men were the farmers. Roger Williams observed that men and women worked in combined agricultural labor but women mostly did the farming work. Women probably worked the most because they were mainly the ones that had to support the family but the men helped them. They normally produced two or three heaps of twelve, fifteen or twenty bushels of food. While the women farmed, the men hunted animals, deer being the most important- contributing to ninety percent of the meat eaten in the tribe. Men also fished and collected numerous shellfish like clams, oysters, scallops and lobsters.…

Coastal and Plateau Native Americans had very different housing styles. The Coastal lived in houses called longhouses. Longhouses were large permanent cedar log houses that were usually 40 to 100 feet long. There were no windows and very few doors (Lambert 105). On the other hand, the Plateau Natives lived in tepees. Since the Plateau Natives were nomadic, which means they did not stay in one place for long, they moved frequently. That required a form of shelter that was easy to put up and take down. A tepee is a cone shaped shelter made of several long poles covered by woven mats or animal hides. During the winter, the Plateau Native Americans would move into caves, or construct a pit house which is covered in animal skin, hides,…

These earth lodges were usually big enough to shelter up to seven families at a time. For example, “The Mandan Indians lived in settled villages of round earthen lodges. Mandan lodges were made from wooden frames covered with packed earth. When Mandan men went on hunting trips, they often used small buffalo-hide tepees as temporary shelter”(source A). This shows that the houses the Mandan people lived in were lodges made of earth and usually very large enough to hold seven families. This also shows that when the men were on hunts they set up buffalo hide tepees as temporary shelter. The Mandan clothing was very unique because the man and women wore many different animal hides. For example. “The clothes worn by the Mandan men consisted of breechcloths, fringed buckskin tunics and leggings. Warm buffalo robes or cloaks or blankets were also worn to protect against the rain and the cold”(source B). This shows that the Mandan wore many different types of animal hide clothing. This also shows that they used their resource that nature provided to them. All in all the mandan people had very unique living and clothing…
