North Carolina Student Spending Case Study
In the state of North Carolina, the statistics for teacher pay and student spending is lagging with being 42nd for the highest paid in the nation and 46th for highest per-pupil spending (Teaching in North Carolina). Also, it has been made known that UNC systems enrollment in education programs is down roughly thirty percent since 2010 (Teaching in North Carolina). With all mentioned, North Carolina teachers are being down-graded and undervalued. Their lack of being down-graded and undervalued will haunt North Carolina as they begin losing their most influential and enthusiastic teachers. Parents and guardians want the absolute greatest for their children and majority of the time, education is the only chance their children have to ensure future …show more content…
One proposed solution is to provide more scholarship or loan forgiveness programs for college students in educational programs. The lowered percentage of enrollment in educational programs must be addressed and corrected. With the scholarships and loan forgiveness programs, this will hopefully reel in more students and continue to keep those already interested. Doing this will hopefully raise the percentage of students enrolling in education which will start a chain of impactful reactions. One example of this would be producing more educators, producing more educators will decrease the amount of non-certified and inexperienced teachers teaching. The “under-appreciated” teacher epidemic of North Carolina needs to be completely terminated. NC Legislators, educators constantly mold and shape the keys to the America’s future for 8 hours a day and 5 days a week. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment must be recognized in the most prominent way. The loans and scholarships programs will be like that of a gift of gratitude for students, who despite all the problems such as of under-pay, will be rewarded and acknowledged for their compassion to commit to a flaw-filled career.     There are mixed emotions in regards to merit pay in the Chesapeake School district especially those that are new to the district or just graduated from college. The district’s goal for implementation of merit pay is that it gives others the opportunity to learn from their colleagues. The other downfall of merit pay is that teachers will be penalized if they fail to meet the goals of merit pay and this could be cumbersome for those just embarking on a new teaching career. It cost thousands of more dollars to house a prisoner in prison for a year than to send a child to school from kindergarden to their senior year in high school. If the states invested in good teachers with qualifications that meet high standards, prisons would not be so crowded. Teachers are what make a school succeed or fail. Without good teachers; students understand little, to no knowledge being presented to them in class causing them to drop out. Shown in this documentary, schools make it impossible to fire a bad teacher for anything short of a criminal act or the teacher qualifies for tenure, which mean that a teacher is ensured their job for life and cannot be terminated. These awful teachers are known as “lemons” and in order for the schools to get rid of them they perform what is called the “lemon dance” with other school, which involves schools swapping their worst-performing teachers at the end of the year in hoping that their lemon isn’t as bad as another school’s lemon. We write with the purpose to make you aware of Profe’s profound impact on the community and the growth of her students both in the context of academics and ethics; her notable qualities and dedication to her profession are of a role model. While Profe’s style of teaching is unorthodox at some points, this unorthodoxy provides students with a diverse and meaningful education in an otherwise, orthodox day. A quality that is central to Profe’s teaching and persona is her receptiveness to student opinion, which in our opinion should be a constant in all student-teacher relationships. For example, if a student feels that a decision in terms of either a grade or punishment she made was unjust, Profe is fully open to a one-on-one discussion, either during a mutual free or before or after school. Profe’s actions reject the notion of “my way or the highway” and epitomize the characteristic of open-mindedness: a quality that is crucial in our increasingly globally connected society. For a personal anecdote, during a student’s sophomore year he felt that he did not deserve grade X; therefore, he approached Profe and asked to meet with her before school. The student and Profe discussed the grade and while the grade remained unchanged, he had a better understanding as to why he received grade X and how he can avoid receiving grade X in the future. In another, unrelated circumstance, Profe organizes an annual in-class food drive to afford families in the Bronx a decent Thanksgiving meal, which reveals her altruism and devotion to paying it forward. Moments such as these are what define Profe’s impact and overall career to DHS and academia. As a community, we are here to support a teacher who has supported us.
